The Celestion is very well located to explore Auckland and its surrounds. A short 5-10 minute walk in any direction will get you to the required areas of the city - the CBD, shopping area, harbour area, University of Auckland etc. I was there during the World Cup, but during the weekdays between the Quarter-Final and Semi-Final, so the room rates were of a typical yearly price. I did get a very good rate through Expedia however.
Check-in took a little longer that what I would have expected with only one reception staff at 8:30am in the morning. Coming off a 6 hour flight and crossing 5 timezones, I really wanted to get some sleep before a 3pm meeting. There were other occassions throughout my stay where there appeared to be a lack of attentiveness by the reception staff and I was left waiting to get an exit parking coupon despite them standing at one end of the desk not doing much.
The apartments were spacious with well functioning kitchen facilities and utensils. The bedroom was spacious with a separate closet provided, and a very comfortable and proper queen bed (not two singles pushed together). Decor is new, modern and comfortable. The bathroom was also spacious but they use the cheap liquid/gel dispensing soap that also doubles as shampoo, certainly not what I would expect from a 4.5 star hotel/apartment.
There are a bunch of restaurants located below, predominantly Japanese cuisine, but there is an Indian restaurant adjacent to the lobby (I did not try it). If you are after a quick and cheap meal then Tanpopo next door makes some decent ramen noodles and had cheap Asahi ($5). There is also a large Countdown supermarket 2 minutes walk from the apartments which is open 24/7 for groceries if you want to organise your own breakfasts/meals. Otherwise it's a short walk to the harbour area or short drive to the Parnell area for excellent choices of restaurants to suit all budgets.
The major annoyance however was the car parking arrangement. $18/day however you need to park your car in a public multi-story carpark which is a 5 minute walk away. Fine if your plans involve going out in the morning and coming back in the evening, but for someone who is frequently coming and going it's a real hassle as there is very limited street parking nearby.
This could well have been given a 5 but the parking arrangement, dispensing soap and attentiveness of reception rates a 4, given it markets itself as a 4.5 star outfit.
