“Excellent authentic French fare”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

The restaurant decor gives the impression there is nothing out of the ordinary about La Cigale, at least at first glance. However, the ability to explore the excellent wine cellar and make a selection to enjoy with your meal, or to take home, makes it clear that this is a place that is serious about offering a quality experience. The food is more French provincial than haute cuisine, which adds to its appeal. The various dishes chosen by the group for main course were all of a very high standard and the deserts were extremely good. Atmosphere was great, with frequent input from the helpful staff. Highly recommended.

“Unusual venue, charming in a rustic kind of way”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

There were ten of us for a team lunch before Christmas. We had the set menu. Service was efficient, the food was well served and tasty (though some portions were small). We had French wine (inevitably, and you can't bring your own). Pricing was generally good value, with coffee included in the set price.

The ambience of the venue may not be to everyone's taste; there weren't many other tables taken that day, so the setting is a bit barn-like. I would go again, though, and try to coincide with the French market, to see if the atmosphere warms up a little.

“breakfast”
Reviewed 24 November 2011

Great place to walk down to for Saturday morning breakfast - what a great start to the day - oyster fritter, crepe, coffee and half a chocolate danish. Great setup for the walk up the steep hill. Make sure i go here anytime i am in Auckland for the weekend.

“Rustic setting and delicious food”
Reviewed 24 September 2011

We dined as a group of four for an evening meal on a Thursday. Meals are pre-ordered. We enjoyed a beautifully tender lamb casserole and a gorgeous creamy tarragon chicken. The food was delicious - felt like an exceedingly good home cooked meal.
The restaurant was quite busy which may explain why no-one came to check if drinks were required after the first was consumed. Consequently we drank water! It unfortunately took a very long time for the wait staff to check in to see if dessert/cheese was required.
That aside, the food more than made up for the service. Would definitely dine here again.
