“A fine collection in a fine house”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

James Wallace has been a collector of New Zealand art for many decades, and many of the pieces in his collection are on show here. I found about half of them gave me active pleasure--which for contemporary art is a very high hit rate. It's very much the product of a personal taste, sometimes a touch quirky, and often fun.
The collection is housed in a splendid house in the middle of a park. There is a cafe: the food is decent rather than brilliant, but you can eat on the verandah and enjoy the view and the outdoor sculpture, so the visit is worthwhile even if you only have a passing interest in contemporary art.
Entrance is free, though contributions are invited; parking is free and plentiful; there is an elevator, and the building is recently renovated according to the modern accessibility code.
Definitely worth visiting after the obvious big attractions of the Museum and the Auckland Art Gallery; good for wet or fine weather, though best on a nice day.

“Beautiful setting and interesting art”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

Lovely place to visit. Great to look around at the gardens and the art works. Cafe is good, but the service is lacking in personality, pretty slow and a bit painful. Other than that still a good place to spent a hour or two.

“Lovely spot on sunny day, child friendly cafe”
Reviewed 3 March 2012

This is a hidden treasure in Auckland. We took family visiting from Ireland here on a sunny Friday and they loved it. Spent a pleasant couple of hours here, looking at the art in the historic well restored homestead ( the art changes regularily) and walking around the grounds and adjoining park. For lunch the cafe serves tasty, reasonably priced counter food including great cakes (there is also a menu of cooked food from the kitchen). Grab a table on the verandah and let the littlies run around the grass.

“pity about the pictures!”
Reviewed 2 March 2012

Lovely house, carefully restored. Pleasant cafe in awkward space on cold side of the building. Art is quite striking but fairly horrid. There is a lot of it, however.
