Apart from a lack of communication between reception and concierge which resulted in our bag not being delivered to our room in a timely fashion, the service was generally of a good standard, and the staff very courteous.
Service at the reception and the restaurant were outstanding. Catered for Gluten Free person. The atmosphere and environment were excellent.
I just spent 3 days at this property and on so many counts was very impressed but alas couldn't quite rate it Excellent as it falls short (in my opinion on a few things).
I cannot rate the staff highly enough, they were excellent although I sense they were still getting used to their transition to Sofitel, nothing was too much trouble and they were all pleasant to deal with.
I'm not sure if it's a Softel thing (I don't tend to stay at Sofitel's often), but was a bit put off by the 'Bonjour' welcome...that might feel nice in Paris but in Auckland, New Zealand it just feels a bit wrong, would much prefer good morning, good evening or some local NZ lingo.
The rooms were really well fitted out, very comfortable, my only gripe with them is that there's not a great deal of a sense of privacy given they overlook other rooms on the other side of the small and narrow courtyard. I prefer to have natural light but always felt I had to close the wooden shutters or blinds for any sense of privacy when in the room.
The rooms had a really lovely bathroom with large tub which was great for soaking in after a day walking around NZ or after my 8 course degustation lunch at Eurobar.
The breakfast was tasty although a fairly poor showing in the fruit department, could definitely be improved and was glad breakfast was included.
My biggest bugbear with 5 star hotels is wifi charges and this hotel scores an epic fail on that front.
I'm sorry but charging me NZ$29.90 for 24 hours of wifi leaves me feeling ripped off. Either include it or offer it at a reasonable rate...in this day and age internet access isn't a luxury it's a necessity and it's about time 5 star hotels started including it FOC as part of their accommodation package.
Overall a really nice hotel, great location (only a 5-10 minute walk to the harbourside restaurants) and was very well taken care of.
