Not particularly anything to look at from the outside, but nevertheless this is a great hotel, with an understated air of refined quality and distinction. It is impeccably clean everywhere and everything if not brand new, looks and feels brand new. You get the same high standards of service and all mod cons that you always get with the brand. We stayed in a 'Luxury room with Marina View' which cost only slightly more than the regular King rooms etc and is well worth that little extra. Great view over Viaduct Harbour Marina, the view is essentially the whole length of the room with sliding glass doors with Juliet Balcony. The Bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was sparkling with deep bath and shower with multiple shower heads. simply cannot fault the place. It would be difficult to be better placed too, right on the marina and within spitting distance of the CBD and the Vibrant Viaduct Harbour nightlife and restaurants (literally 3 minutes walk so no need for a hire car or taxi's. If you are eating out and like seafood, we had a great dinner at 'Kermadec' on Viaduct Harbour Avenue and decent pint (or two) of Guinness & Kilkenny's with live music afterwards at Danny Doolans. In the morning after a good night out I can thoroughly recommend 'Jones the grocer' on custom street west for an excellent breakfast. We didnt have the Sofitel breakfast as while I am sure it would be a good breakfast we thought $37 per person was a bit excessive! Valet Parking (you kind of have to have it) and its an additional $35 per night.
The 'side order of pretentiousness' that I mention is the ridiculous idea of all hotel staff greeting you in French (Bonjour etc.) particularly as none of them speak French. I don't know if its a new thing but I have only come across it in NZ Sofitels - anyway annoying and potentially embarrassing for your staff if they actually address a French guest who in response would not be understood - please stop! Otherwise great hotel in an ideal tranquil location.
We recently stayed at the Sofitel having chosen it from other reviews on Trip Advisor and we could not have been more impressed. As soon as our taxi pulled up at the hotel we were greeted by concierge who assisted us with our bags. Very impressive already! The hotel lobby is just amazing and reminded us of resort hotels in Thailand.
We specifically booked a junior suite to ensure we had a harbor view and it was worth paying that bit extra especially as we were staying for 3 nights. Other rooms in the hotel do face inwards and you end up looking straight into other rooms. The junior suite we stayed in was just perfect with a great view over Viaduct Harbour. The room was a good size and so was the fantastic bathroom. The room was also the cleanest hotel room we have seen for quite some time, we couldn't fault anything which was refreshing. A daily maid service and nightly turn down service with complementary bottle of water per person was also a nice touch.
We highly recommend the hotel bar, talk to the staff for some good local restaurant recommendations.
Overall we were so impressed with the Sofitel that we highly recommend anyone has a look when booking accommodation in Auckland. The hotel has only been operating since February-March 2012. We have not yet found a hotel of this quality or standard in Australia which is in a similar pricing bracket. Well done to the New Zealander's and to Sofitel for making our first visit so enjoyable!
Excellant hotel The parking was expensive
All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Would definitely stay again. It is a 10 minute walk to nearest restaurants.
Buffet breakfast was good but the full breakfast was very expensive.
From the time you arrive you feel welcomed. The decor is elegent and spaces. All the team very friendly and helpful. Rooms was of a very high standard and if you wanted any they are quick to get it for you (trim milk 4 coffee) . Forgot our swmwear as didn't realise it had a pool which was a shame , but always nice time.
Lava the inhouse restaurant was truely amazing experience with wonderful tasting dishes with a good selection of wine to match. Service was also very good with our dishes explained on arrivel at our table . I like this as it makes you appreciate the process of the dish.
I have also been told by a friend that the day spa is also amazing if you have time. Well done Sofitel , nice to have such a good qualifity hotel in Auckland.
