This was a 1 night stay in Auckland before heading over to Waiheke Island. This is a chic, stylish hotel at the far end of the Viaduct area of the harbourfront. Check-in was swift though assistance with our luggage was slow.
We stayed in a modern and spacious corner suite with a comfortable bed and very large bathroom. The cot we had booked for our 18-month old toddler was waiting in our room and was of a very high standard with high quality linens.
Breakfast was of a continental style in keeping with the Sofitel’s French brand positioning which meant choices were rather limited. But there was a fresh cooked-to-order hot menu which was of a very high standard.
The one thing that frustrated me was the constant attempts introduce French elements to the service such as greeting you with ‘Bonjour’ everywhere you went. New Zealanders are great at giving friendly service and I would have preferred to have experienced a genuine NZ greeting rather than a forced French greeting.
The location won’t be to everyone’s taste either. When staying in Auckland I much prefer to stay in the neighbourhoods of Parnell, Newmarket or Ponsonby where there is a lot more culture/spirit rather than downtown/harbourfront which is a little on the soulless side.
Is this a nice, stylish hotel? Yes. Would I stay here again? Probably not.More
