we stayed (3 adults and 2 children ) 3 nights at Sofitel over New Year. We were fortunate to get rooms facing the Skytower so we could fully enjoy the fireworks on NY eve. The biggest praise goes to the concierge gentlemen (several came to our assistance at all points of time) who went above and beyond duty to help us to find a fab restaurant for New Years eve, of course one of those things that we should have looked into in advance but never came round to... We ended up in a fabulous Japanese restaurant (Ebisu), where we got a booking despite they don't take bookings but because of the relations to the hotel. Great! And the food and the service in this restaurant was incredible. What a wonderful meal we had.
To the hotel itself. One major complaint: a very badly specified Internet and horrendously expensive. The half hour free Internet to be enjoyed on in lobby (WHY the lobby???) gave 10mb which lasted about 3 minutes. The number of times we bothered the staff with questions about the connections were numerous and then often ending up in having a free voucher that also expired within minutes. What a shame. When we went to talk to them again about the problem already 3 other furious hotel guests were giving them a hard time about it. That simply should work in a hotel. I do not understand why it is not free either. It seems so old fashioned that Internet is so overpriced and this situation is definitely a driver of dissatisfaction.
The hotel had a lovely pool, in fact a lap pool. But it was very difficult to swim if you were not alone, I think mainly because it was missing a discreet stripe on the bottom to follow. The water was not very clear and as I was swimming at one point with another guest I ended up taking a hit every time passing him because he couldn't really stick to a fairly straight (invisible) line... Also both the sauna and steam rooms did not function (the hotel offered to pay for using another nearby facility though). The rooms were really lovely and the good coffee machine was a very nice touch. There are not a lot of facilities in this hotel apart from a prohibitory priced internet as well as far too expensive movie rental (1 is 15.95!!). When you travel with children and they want to chill it is just a lifesaver if both (Internet and Movies) are affordable and of a reasonable quality. I think it could definitely increase customer satisfaction if these propositions were looked at. The Television is internet based I believe but the quality!!! It was nowhere near HD and worse than any analogue we ever used to watch. Wonder what was wrong there..?
The little outdoor area in the lobby is completely underdeveloped. Could really be nice but try and sit in the chairs there. If you are 80kg (which the gentlemen in our party qualified to) they are giving way... could be a lovely area though..
Conclusion to our stay. I quite like the hotels discreet elegance and the fact it is so relatively small. We felt great there. Internet service, or lack thereof, represented a truly unnecessary nuisance.
