we stayed (3 adults and 2 children ) 3 nights at Sofitel over New Year. We were fortunate to get rooms facing the Skytower so we could fully enjoy the fireworks on NY eve. The biggest praise goes to the concierge gentlemen (several came to our assistance at all points of time) who went above and beyond duty to help us to find a fab restaurant for New Years eve, of course one of those things that we should have looked into in advance but never came round to... We ended up in a fabulous Japanese restaurant (Ebisu), where we got a booking despite they don't take bookings but because of the relations to the hotel. Great! And the food and the service in this restaurant was incredible. What a wonderful meal we had.
To the hotel itself. One major complaint: a very badly specified Internet and horrendously expensive. The half hour free Internet to be enjoyed on in lobby (WHY the lobby???) gave 10mb which lasted about 3 minutes. The number of times we bothered the staff with questions about the connections were numerous and then often ending up in having a free voucher that also expired within minutes. What a shame. When we went to talk to them again about the problem already 3 other furious hotel guests were giving them a hard time about it. That simply should work in a hotel. I do not understand why it is not free either. It seems so old fashioned that Internet is so overpriced and this situation is definitely a driver of dissatisfaction.
The hotel had a lovely pool, in fact a lap pool. But it was very difficult to swim if you were not alone, I think mainly because it was missing a discreet stripe on the bottom to follow. The water was not very clear and as I was swimming at one point with another guest I ended up taking a hit every time passing him because he couldn't really stick to a fairly straight (invisible) line... Also both the sauna and steam rooms did not function (the hotel offered to pay for using another nearby facility though). The rooms were really lovely and the good coffee machine was a very nice touch. There are not a lot of facilities in this hotel apart from a prohibitory priced internet as well as far too expensive movie rental (1 is 15.95!!). When you travel with children and they want to chill it is just a lifesaver if both (Internet and Movies) are affordable and of a reasonable quality. I think it could definitely increase customer satisfaction if these propositions were looked at. The Television is internet based I believe but the quality!!! It was nowhere near HD and worse than any analogue we ever used to watch. Wonder what was wrong there..?
The little outdoor area in the lobby is completely underdeveloped. Could really be nice but try and sit in the chairs there. If you are 80kg (which the gentlemen in our party qualified to) they are giving way... could be a lovely area though..
Conclusion to our stay. I quite like the hotels discreet elegance and the fact it is so relatively small. We felt great there. Internet service, or lack thereof, represented a truly unnecessary nuisance.

It was intially a bit difficult to find the Sofitel as it's situated at a quiet corner of the harbor, and not many locals know the location of the hotel as it's quite new. It's best to google for directions beforehand especially if you're driving. The location is good as you can take a quick walk to eateries by the harbor and the harbor area is beautiful!
If possible, get the harbor view rooms. The first night we stayed in one of the rooms facing the road and it was quite noisy. The rooms are very new and well-appointed. The bathrooms are spacious with a bath tub and shower. The bed was very comfortable.
Service was good and although there were some hiccups here and there, the staff did their best to look after the needs of their guests.
Breakfast at the restaurant can get abit crowded as the restaurant is not very big and is the busiest after 9am.
Overall a very comfortable stay!

We could not fault anything about our stay at this beautifully appointed hotel. The bar and restaurant staff were so friendly and the food and special cocktails made just for us were fantastic. First time to Auckland and loved every minute.

We decided to book somewhere nice for our new year stay in the city and this seemed the perfect spot. Location was great. Everything inside the hotel was well below our expectations.

Room service took well over an hour both times. Unforgivable.

Staff were ok, but so slow.

Internet policy was unbearably slow and expensive.

Everywhere else we have stayed we got two good sized beds in a twin room. Not in this 5 star. It was a double bed split into two small singles. I fell out on the first night. And no sheets on the last night

And please stop saying bonjour and bonsoir to guests- we are not in France...if only! At least they know how to run a slick hotel...
