“Convenient and Comfortable”
Reviewed 8 April 2007

The Crowne Plaza is a modern high rise hotel in the center of downtown Auckland. We stayed just one night (Feb. 2007) at the beginning of our 3-week trip but we would strongly recommend it for longer stays. The location is excellent, just 1 ½ short blocks from the Sky Center & Bus Terminal, and an easy walk to the waterfront area. The Sky Bus from the airport stops at the main entrance. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. There are great views of downtown from the top floors. Hotel parking is $18 NZD per day.

Our room (2610) was large and well-appointed with two comfortable double beds, a desk, closet, center bed stand, and a large attractive bathroom with tub/shower combination and adequate counter space. We booked online with a 2-week pre-pay option and the rate was a very good value given the amenities and location of the hotel.

We strongly recommend the Crowne Plaza for its location, comfort, and value.

The Crowne Plaza is extremely well located in Downtown Auckland - close to the SkyTower, shops, and only a ten minute walk to the Harbour front.
Although a standard Crowne Plaza set-up, busy at times, the staff are friendly and helpful.
The King Bureau room we stayed in was clean and comfortable and, if not luxurious, provided everything we needed for an enjoyable three night stay at a very reasonable rate (14 day advance purchase).
On our first evening we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant and were pleasantly surprised by the excellent choice and standard of food provided.
The concierge excelled by securing the last available table for us in the Skytower Restaurant for our final night and that just rounded off a perfect introduction to Auckland and the start of our New Zealand holiday.

We stayed in March, and spoiled ourselves slightly and went for one of the executive suites. Due to the exchange rate it was well worth the extra few pounds - these rooms are on the 28th floor - they are very spacious - spread over two floors, with 2 large plasma TV's, double shower and double bath - even his and her's toilet rolls!! It was very comfortable and included excellent breakfast, free internet access and, if you are so inclined, free drinks and nibbles between 5 and 7 in the club lounge. Ate twice in the hotel restaurant and the food was excellent ( and decent portions). We Will stay there again.

Stayed here in Feb 2007 as our first stop on a tour of NZ. Arrived after an overnight flight from San Francisco at 06:30 in the morning, very tired and in desparate need of freshening up. In theory our booking did not allow check-in until 2:00 pm, but the incredibly helpful night-clerk arranged for a vacant room to be cleaned for us by some staff who had just started work. She suggested we go and have a coffee at a nearby cafe and return at 07:30 and she would be able to let us in. Our bags were stored for us while we waited and as promised when we returned we were duly given an excellent corner room, looking down the main street towards the harbour. (This lovely lady went off duty at 08:00 and we didn't see her again on our stay. We left a note for the manager on checking out, praising their staff, but had no reply.) Overall, room was clean, equipped with all the necessary "stuff", which all worked (not always the case elsewhere). All staff were helpful offering tourist advice and guidance. Brilliant location, right in the centre of the city with easy access (i.e. measured in yards not miles) to almost every major attraction, e.g. harbour, ferries, maritime museum, Sky Tower etc. Would not hesitate to stay here again and thought it good value, booked via Expedia for about £65 (Pound Sterling) per room per night.
N.B. The airport link bus (excellent service, best way into the city by far) dropped us off at the door, but this was just because the driver was being helpful and had few passengers. The actual bus stop is 250 yards away round the corner at the base of the Sky Tower. So on departure do not stand outside the hotel waiting to be picked up or you will see the bus sail passed you!

We stayed at the Crowne plaza for two nights, and were very satisfied with all aspects of the hotel. The double queen room was large, well furnished (with sofa and armchairs), and had a good side-view down to the harbour. However, what most impressed us, was that we arrived at the hotel at 9:00 a.m., after an early morning flight into Auckland, and were immediately given access to the room, even though official check-in time is 2:00p.m. This made an enormous difference to our enjoyment of our first day in New Zealand. The staff at check-in were also very polite and friendly.
We did not eat in the hotel, apart from breakfast, and although we had no trouble being seated, I can understand some of the other reviews referring to problems if large coach groups turn up at the same time. I suspect we came down to breakfast after they had gone.
The location is good, within comfortable walking distance of the water front area (although there are other hotels closer to this area).
If we were to return to Auckland, I would have no hesitation in staying at the Crowne Plaza again.

Very centrally located at Auckland for walking around the city. Service was good with no exceptions from speedy front desk and friendly restaurant to excellent concierge. Breakfast was nice, but a bit over priced.

Lobby and other public areas are quite polished and nice looking, but rooms were extremely spartan and very worn. Housekeeping would also require some attention, we actually found a white tennis sock from our bed lining on the first evening!

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the Crowne Plaza in February. We had a lovely, spacious, clean room with 2 queen beds and a lovely bathroom. The room was comfortable and very quiet. The hotel is very convenient to the town and attached to a shopping centre.

There was a great selection for dinner on the a la carte menu and the food was beautiful. On our first night we were told that we could eat what we wanted from the a la carte menu as it was included in our price. (We were part of a tour group). However when we had finished the meal the same member of staff came over to our table and apologised and explained that we would have to pay for the meal as it was not included. On our second night I don't think the staff could cope with the crowds as we had to wait for well over an hour on our dinner. A lot of customers were complaining about the lack of service/food on that particular evening. Also on the previous evening we had been told by reception that we did not need to book the restaurant so we thought that we wouldn't need to book a table on the second evening. We were wrong. We were told that we should have booked as there were no tables available until after 9.00 pm.

Great selection of food at breakfast and it was lovely. However, the staff could not cope with the crowds on the second morning - there were no seats available for guests.

On check-in we were asked if we had a reservation made as they could not locate our booking. They eventually found our details. Also, we had a problem locating our rep and the reception staff were not very helpful. Finally, Nigel, the concierge came to our rescue - he was more than helpful in tracking down our rep.

There was also a problem with the key cards for the hotel doors. Everyone had to insert the cards 3 or 4 times before the door would open.

Other than the above problems, food was lovely and the hotel was lovely - great view from the lift.

  • Liked — The food
  • Disliked — Slow service in the restaurant and not overly helpful reception staff
