“Fantastic Location, Fantastic Value - it's no Five Star but it's a No Brainer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

This is certainly not a five star hotel - in fact it's a pretty old motel that used to be called Barrycourt. But there has been a lot of renovation and the room interiors have come up pretty well. We arrived at night and I had a sinking feeling looking at the concrete block building - it's not pretty and I was concerned how things would be inside. We had booked a 2 bedroom apartment on Level 3. On check in the lobby was fine and it was easy to park outside - rather like motel parking outside the building - which was very easy and convenient. Our apartment was quite large - both bedrooms had 2 beds - one with 2 doubles and the other had a double and a single The bathroom was large enough (with a washer and dryer inside), a kitchen and a lounge room with all the usual features and a deck outside with a nice view of Auckland. You can certainly tell it's an old hotel but the refurb is tastefully done and everything was clean and tidy and modern. The bedrooms had old fashioned wardrobes - the kind that have a dressing table built into the centre - but it provided more more useful space than most modern bedroom furnishings.

Internet is free - but you need to join the club! After signing up to the the Quality Hotel club we had free internet access and it was great high speed internet that worked brilliantly - this is a huge advantage as so many hotels charge a bomb for internet. Location is another great thing about this hotel - it's about 5 mins walk to Parnell Road - a street full of coffee shops and restaurants - and some fab boutiques. It's so much nicer in Parnell than the city (just 5-7 mins away) - so why wouldn't you want to stay here!

The only downside of the hotel was noise - but a very particular noise. On the first night, I could hear voices like they were next to me - as it turned out, there were people sitting on their deck above our room and the voices just carry so much. I actually had to call Reception at 2am to say the voices were getting quite loud and I was unable to sleep and within minutes it stopped. The next couple of nights there were obviously older people in the room above so their voices were quieter when they sat on their deck - but even then, for some reason if someone is sitting on the deck above you, you hear everything. That's actually quite a big downside if you're a light sleeper but I guess it depends on what sort of room you have!.

We paid NZ$196 a night for our 2 bedroom apartment and we booked that directly with the hotel. That's amazing value! Next time we book, I will check about the noise issues and choose a room accordingly but at that price with parking and internet and lovely staff at the hotel, you simply can't do better in Auckland. I normally use booking engines but with this hotel, call them directly as you get just as good a deal - or better!

We will definitely be back.

My room on the 3rd floor had a nice view of the water, and the bed was fairly comfortable. Parking was super convenient, and I'm glad they don't charge for it. The staff at reception were friendly and welcoming. The biggest down side is the terrible restaurant. My omelette was fried to the point of becoming rubber, and the fries stank of old, fishy grease. I had never before done this in my life, but--out of reflex--spit my food out onto my plate upon first bite. That is how bad it was. To the restaurant staff's credit, however, the server acknowledged the problems and my concerns and did not charge me for the uneaten meal. I'm grateful she had the courtesy and class to take my honest feelings into account. For that, she earned my respect--for herself and on behalf of the hotel, as well.

Room Tip: Stay at the hotel but don't eat at the restaurant.

Thank you for your recent stay with us, and whilst we are pleased that you enjoyed your overall stay at our Hotel, it was disappointing to read of your experience with some of our food items on our lunch menu. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and as a result our Chef has reviewed the cooking procedure for these dishes to ensure that we do not have any further lapses in quality, as we always endeavour to either meet or exceed our guests expectations.

I hope that we may have the opportunity to welcome you back to our Hotel in the near future.

We stayed here for five nights. Room was what we expected - fairly basic but great value for money. The only down sides were that the walls are paper-thin, there is no safe, and the bathroom configuration is strange, in that it is immediately next to the entrance making opening the door tricky.

It is about a 25 minute walk into Auckalnd CBD if you are a strong walker - there are several hills to contest to get there!

This is a lovely place to stay as long as the outside temperature is below 50F or 10C. There is no air conditioning which would be fine except that there is

NO VENTILATION and on the third floor the roof turns the room into an oven. The room was 87F, 30C when we checked in at 7pm and by midnight was still 79F, 26C. This was in spite of leaving the door to the room wide open for an hour. The windows are nicely theftproof, but that means they open no more than 2 inches (5cm). The front windows might let some air in with the light privacy drapes, but the high intensity light right outside the room, would then shine right in on the bed, like sleeping in the sun at noon. So we had to draw the blackout drapes, which are essentially airtight.

The staff was lovely to work with, they brought us two liters of ice cold water. They were very helpful with the Internet and directions.

Did I mention there is NO FAN either!

So we took cold showers, slept nude with no covers and thanked our lucky stars that we were only booked for one night and would be on an air-conditioned cruise ship after check out.

Did I mention that there are NO SCREENS either. Fortunately, there seem to be no mosquitoes or biting insects, merely a cloud of moths.

Room Tip: Travel in cold weather or see if they have rooms with air conditioning, fans, windows that really op...

Dear acesneights

Thank you for your recent stay with us, and subsequent review. It is always very disappointing to receive feedback of this nature, as guest comfort is of a high importance to us, and we are usually rated highly for this. Whilst we do not have air-conditioning in our rooms, there should have been a fan for your use placed in the room, and it seems that this may have been over looked on this occasion. Please accept my apologies for this over sight.

I hope that your cruise went well, and that we may have the opportunity to welcome you back to our Hotel in the future.

Yours Sincerely

Our family of 3 stayed here three nights in a one bedroom with kitchen that worked well. A great location near excellent Parnell St, and a gem of a cafe nearby Brighton Rd Cafe - best cafe food ever! In an upper mid-class residential area, so quiet and easy good parking. Small bathroom, but shower had excellent water pressure. The housekeeping staff esp were wonderful and had sharp attention to detail. Terrific value for money. Ask for a harbour view room on upper floor, fabulous view.

Drove from Auckland Airport. Convenient to city & unless you have a reason to stay in Auckland, Parnell or Devonport ( by boat) are smaller & nicer. Ate in restaurant which was surprisingly nice. Had booked city tour & was picked up, but came back on the bus!
Room & bathroom functional & WiFi worked OK.
Can recommend.

Room Tip: Even with big cases there's a lift...
