“Great Hotel in Auckland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2010

Having read previous reviews I wondered what sort of hotel this was going to be! BUT this is a very good hotel on the main street in Auckland well placed for the Sky Tower and Downtown. The rooms are very good, well equipped with microwave, fridge, sink, cutlery, plates etc. Ours was particularly quiet and on the 8th floor. The hotel has a good restaurant if you do not want to feed yourself. The bedding, towels, etc are all of high quality. The staff are friendly and co-operative and will help you all they can. I think that the previous reviews were made under the name of the Hotel Airedale but I think it is now only known as the Scenic Hotel. We spent three nights here and were well satisfied.

Stayed here in a studio room at the beginning of December 2009 (although we have stayed here previously in a larger studio). We got a cheap deal of wotif which included breakfast, valet parking and a late checkout at 1pm.

Our room was exactly as expected, small kitchenette with table and chairs (2), living area with two chairs and TV and a queen bed. Bathroom nice and compact (the shower was outstanding - great pressure). We ordered dinner in (pizza from SAL's - best pizza I have ever had) and there was enough room to sit and eat.

Breakfast was okay - I was assured prior to arriving that this would be a full buffet (hot and cold) but turns out was cold buffet with cooked big breakfast - bacon, eggs, hash browns etc. Was good and tasty and neither of us walked away hungry.

I enjoy staying at this hotel, its nice and central, the rooms are good - clean and tidy. If you have to pay for valet parking its only $12.50 which is half the price of other hotels in the area. The staff are always polite and welcoming.

If you can get a deal of a last minute site, I would recommend this hotel for people who just need somewhere to sleep - if you are in the area for shopping, nightlife or a concert etc.

We just wanted a clean and cheaper hotel to stay in while staying in the city. We hadn't really heard much about this hotel but we were pleasantly surprised for what we paid for. Valet parking and breakfast were included in the package so the room itself was a very reasonable price. The locality is close but not too close to all the noise in the city at the lower end of Queen Street.. Staff were pleasant but not too in your face. Rooms were small (we were in a studio though) but had everything you needed presented in a very clean and tiday manner. Should definitely be considered if you're looking for a clean and reasonably priced hotel.

This old hotel is in pretty good condition, and although my room's furniture had a dated (vintage?) appearance, everything was clean, the paintwork was as-new, carpets in good shape and the bed linen was very cosy indeed.

My apartment twin room had a homely feeling to it, with an open-plan kitchenette, sofas, side tables, a desk and two single beds. The shower was hot and steady, the bathroom a good size.

Breakfast that came with the room only provided the "continental" selection, so if you just want toast, cereal, fresh fruit, juice, tea and coffee - fine. If you want eggs and bacon, other cooked choices, muffins, cakes or whatever, you need to pay more. The bar had a fair choice of wines, top-shelf booze and an OK espresso.

The location in the centre of Auckland could not be better. Sushi and Thai restaurants are ubiquitous.

My only gripe is with the extortionate internet fees, at $10 for two hours this is expensive, but it has a 30MB limit (30MB!! One short skype call and that's over), after which you pay an additional 10c per MB. Someone doing anything other than exchanging a few attachment-free emails would be stung by this. This sort of pricing harks back to the dial-up era and kind of makes NZ or at least this hotel look a bit, well, 1990's. For this reason I can not recommend the hotel to business travellers or net-addicts. Wake up, Scenic! Free broadband is now standard in most hotels worldwide.

On a positive note, as I left my "do not disturb" sign up all day (the room did not require cleaning), the hotel left a wicker basket of soap, towells and toilet paper outside my door. Nice touch.

From check in to check out, the stay at this hotel was great. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable, clean and the amenities first rate. Room service was fast and great! The location, which was what initially attracted us to the hotel, was the best in Auckland. Very central and within walking distance to everything we needed in the city.
I would highly recommend this hotel to stay in, and will personally be staying there every time I visit Auckland.

The location of the hotel is very good, just a short walk from many of the main attractions and within easy reach of a variety of interesting shops and restaurants.
Our room was quite spacious, almost junior-suite style with a little kitchenette. The bathroom, too, was an okay size.
The overall decor of the hotel is pleasant and retains some nice art deco touches.
We found our room to be on the hot side and the AC did not help much. You can open the windows, but then things get a bit noisy.
The cooked breakfast buffett was good, though if it isn't already included in your room rate, you might want to wander down the street where you can find a variety of cheaper options. The service at breakfast flutuated between very pleasant and bordering on the dopey during our stay.
There appeared to be some sort of homeless hostel in the cul-de-sac side street just next to the hotel and the people sitting outside it didn't look the most welcoming. Then again, maybe they just didn't like foreigners trying to do a three point turn with a chromed up Harley just outside their house.

The double bed was pushed against one wall, which was the only way you could access the wardrobe on the other side of the room. To get into bed you had to crawl from the end. In a room for two people there were only 2 towels in total in each room. There was a sinlge serve (20ml) of shampoo and conditioner supplied in the room, and it was replenished every second day. There were homeless people squatting in the laneway outside the hotel. and a gang of youths were present day and night in the same lanewayt. A dance rave venue was opposite the hotel . The parties did not finish until 4am, with croowds in the street yelling and screaming until 4am. Room service was supplied with no covers over the food on the plates, carried through the lobby of the hotel. If you value your health, don't stay here! The continental breakfast was cereal, toast, fruit and cheese slices and salami. Once the staff in the cafe knew that your breakfast was part of the package, they didn't want to know you. Valet parking took 20 minutes to retrieve the car, and that was after calling ahead to avoid the delay. Flyers were under the windscreen, so no "secure" parking.
