“Great value, central location, spacious, clean and comfortable”
Reviewed 31 October 2012 via mobile

I chose this hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews, and it lived up to hopes and expectations. I needed to balance lower cost with location and comfort, and this delivered on all three. Location is 5 minutes walk to the Skytower, a little further to the harbour, and a couple of minutes from Queen St, the Aotea Centre, and the theatre precinct, so is ideally situated for anyone attending an event in central Auckland.
My room was modern, large, fresh and clean, comfortable, with quality linens and fittings. The gym was adequately equipped, and the pool and sauna looked nice although I didn't use them. All staff were friendly and helpful.
My only suggestion to make this hotel absolutely perfect would be to drop the 3hr limit on free wifi access in rooms: while the access was fast, the 3 hr is continuous from the moment you first connect, eg if you connect at 8am to check tourist info, then wish to check email at 9pm, you theoretically need to pay, since you only get one continuous 3hr connection per 24hr. Reception will provide a code free of charge to reconnect anyway, so the system is easy to get around, but just would be easier if the access was unlimited in the first place!
Apart from this minor quibble, the Rendezvous Grand was excellent, especially at the price, and even more so if you book early through one of the major hotel and travel booking sites. I would definitely stay again, and happily recommend it as a very high standard hotel at a budget price.

Booked this hotel from home before a long flight from the Uk. Arrived and checked in smoothly. They brought all our bags up to the room for us. We only booked one night but decided to stay for two and this wasn't a problem at all. We ordered room service one night which was lovely except the pizza was quite greasy. The food from the lobby bar was nice, and we also had the continental breakfast from the restaurant before we left and it was also very nice.
We chose this hotel for a little luxury after a long flight and it was everything we expected. The bathroom was huge and the bed was large and cosy. Not much of a view out the window as the hotel is situated on a roundabout.
We would definitely stay here again.

Dear Ski25,

Thank you for choosing Rendezvous Grand Hotel Auckland and for your valuable time in completing your review of the hotel.
We were delighted to read that your enjoyed your stay with us and that on arriving after a long flight we were able to provide you with some luxury after your long flight. Our rooms are some of the largest in Auckland, many people take the time to comment on just how good our beds are along with our large “4 point bathrooms” all with separate shower and full sized baths. I will discuss your feedback on the pizza with our Executive Chef with regards to it being a little greasy, however we note that enjoyed other aspects of the rooms service, atrium and breakfast offerings.

Thank you once again and we look forward to welcoming you back to Rendezvous Grand Hotel very soon and trust your enjoyed you visit to New Zealand

My husband and I decided to have a few nights away, and the first night was spent at the Rendezvous. I have stayed here several times. Staff are always friendly, the hotel is so central to Queen St which we like. The newly refurbished rooms are great. Will definitely stay here again.

After reviewing lots of options around the aukland CBD We used this hotel for a sales conference the location was excellent central auckland and easy to access. The room was a good size with outstanding view. Lunch was good and catered well for a few with special dietary needs. Friendly staff. Shared spaces are open and light - it's not glitz and glam but Is overall great value - I would use it again.

This may have been a grand hotel when it hosted APEC meeting in '99 and it may have completed some renovation recently but it looks tired and dated. We were booked for a conference and extended our stay for 2 days. The person checking us in made some mistakes resulting in us being locked out of our room at the end of the conference. The manager on duty who sorted out the mistake simply threw us an indifferent apology in a manner that suggested that we have inconvenienced him. Our Club King room on the 10th floor looked into the parking lot of an office block. On the wall where pictures should be there were only drawing hooks. The buffet spread for breakfast is also very small. At any one time we only saw one bell boy who offered no service - we have to lug our suitcases as well as hail a cab ourselves. When we return to Auckland we will not return to this hotel.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, try asking for a room that overlooks the Aotea Centre.

Dear wenbenSingapore,

Thank you for your review of Rendezvous Grand Hotel Auckland, we certainly have renovated all guest rooms, the public areas and our restaurants within the last 12 months so it was disappointing to read that you found it tired and dated. The team as evidenced by other reviews try and go out of their way to ensure a friendly and caring level of customer service so I would like to extend to you my sincerest apologies for the issue and service you received with your room key. Many of our other guests find our breakfast buffet extensive, it features a wide selection of Fruits, Breads, Cereals, Juices and at least 10 Hot Dishes. I will also discuss your review with our Chef, Concierge and Front Desk Teams in an effort to improve further, In summary we are genuinely sorry you did not enjoy your experience and thank you once again for your feedback.

I am in NZ on a long term contract and have stayed at this hotel for over 9 weeks, i have a reasonably good feel for the place... so listen up!

If you are planning on staying in Auckland cbd look no further, this is definitely the place to stay.

This is supposedly the largest hotel in NZ, with 460+ rooms, and i was a little concerned it may be a little too 'corporate' for my liking, not at all!

My criteria for any hotel room is that it must be quiet, clean (must be smoke free), comfortable, have broadband access, and ideally have a bit of a view. The hotel also should to be close enough to everything that you do not have to waste your time and money on taxis. This hotel ticks all those boxes.

I also chose this hotel as i knew this end of town reasonably well, and many of my favourite cafes and shops are in this zone. Its only a 2 minute walk across to the Aotea centre (via a subway into the hotel car park), with cinemas and many different eateries within minutes, there is no shortage of entertainment.

The hotel itself has a huge atrium in the entrance foyer, with cafe and function hall in this zone, it has very much the 5 star feel., doormen etc - without the usual expense. I have stayed in far worse places in Australia that cost twice the price. There are 12 floors, serviced by 6 lifts - well only 4 most of the time i have been here. There is a huge car park - if you need it. The desk staff are all very pleasant, provide a high level of service, and have been very friendly during my stay.

The room is quite spacious, and well appointed, with a very comfortable king bed with decent quality linen. There is a small bar fridge, couch, and flat screen tft screen. My room has a view toward the city centre, with the sky tower on one side and the Aotea centre directly opposite. The bathroom is of high quality, with a full size bath and good size shower, everything is neatly tiled and quite clean.

Comfort wise the room stays at a steady temperature without any need to play with the thermostat, there is an opening window (a little..) if you really want some 'fresh' air, though most of the time that would result in hypothermia.

The broadband system is a little bizarre. The speed is quite decent, its around the same speed as ADSL1 in wireless mode, a little quicker using the (short..) rj45 cable in the room, which is OK for most applications. The hotel provide 3 hours free per day, though this is only for a single machine, so bad luck if you have a business and a personal laptop, or want to hook your smartphone in for an OS download.. but there are ways around this. You can use one device as a gateway - then hook the other into it if you are desperate.
The strange thing is the timing, if you use the broadband from say 7pm - 10pm one night, then the next night you will have to wait until 7pm or later to connect, there has to be a 24 hour gap. Fortunately the desk staff are well aware of this, and will help out with a free voucher if you are stuck.

Housekeeping staff do a great job, are very friendly, and usually clean the rooms from around 10:30. There are switches for Do not disturb, or make up my room, in the room (no door hangers).

What else? hmm, there is a good size wardrobe, a safe, and a complementary newspaper is delivered around 0830 daily. For those of us doing the long term thing there is also a coin laundry about an 8 minute walk from the hotel, loads cost $6 + $6 to wash and dry, these are rare beasts in Auckland.

TV is fairly limited, there are four or five free to air channels that are riddled with ads ( even by OZ commercial TV standards), there is also SKY movies, discovery and a few sports channels + radio national. I guess they are helping to save our brain cells.

One thing to beware of - occasionally when events are being setup there may be equipment slowly making its way around Aotea square - with the associated warning beepers, and usually very late in the night. As i am a light sleeper at the moment, rather than trying to sleep through it i would always keep a set of earplugs close by on the rare occasion they are needed.

Hotel ratings are a product of the surroundings, the standard of the rooms and the staff, and i rate this hotel close to 5 stars in all respects. There have been a very few minor hiccups along the way, though nothing really worth recounting - its 5/5.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor facing Mayoral drive, far better view, and quieter than the other side of the bu...

Dear mrcurlywhirly

Thank you very much for your extensive review, please if you are still, in the Hotel it would be a pleasure to meet you and buy you a Beer/Wine or Coffee, first hand feedback from a long-stay guest is the most reliable so I really would welcome catching up with you and personally thanking your for this review and your feedback. You have provided us with a fantastic endorsement and I would like to respond and provide you with some further advice or pointers. We are certainly New Zealand’s largest Hotel, however the team remain committed to creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, we are 99% smoke-free and retain some rooms for our regular guests whom we could not risk losing if we fully converted. We have two guest elevators out of service for an extensive renovation project, unfortunately the lead time and installation of elevators is significant, however there are 4 other guest elevators and an additional Club level elevator. The broadband setup should allow you to connect multiple devices via Wi-Fi, I will speak again to our provider and look to make it easier to take your three hours free, if anyone was staying for as long as yourself, please mention to the desk who will enable 24 hours access with our compliments, the other thing we can assist with is the laundry, for all long stay guests we can arrange a discount direct with our laundry provider in an effort to save you some time and hassle, again please just let us know and we can assist.

Thank you very much on behalf of all of the Team here at Rendezvous Grand Hotel Auckland and Best regards Paul
