“Beautiful hotel!”
Reviewed 11 March 2007

We booked this hotel over the internet, and when we arrived, the room we were given exactly fitted our internet request - non-smoking room with a view. I suspect at some stage the room had been a smoking room (or someone had been smoking in there and shouldn't have been), even though it was definitely a non-smoking room, but this wasn't a problem. The hotel foyer was beautiful. The room was beautifully decorated with good facilities. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we got a great internet rate. The hotel is in a good location, about 5 minutes walk from the heart of Auckland, and within walking distance to the harbour. The hotel seems to be a favourite with Japanese groups. Highly recommended!

  • Liked — Decor, friendliness of staff
  • Disliked — Slight smoke smell in non-smoking room

This place is depressing! The common areas are bland, the gift shop is DUSTY with barely anything in it and the restaurants were vacant the entire time we stayed there.

The room was a decent size and clean despite the terrible grout problem in the bathroom.

One cool thing, the bathroom had a speaker so you could listen to the television.

BLEAK, EH?

We started our holiday in NZ at this (then Carlton) hotel. We arrived from an early flight at 8 am (as did several others) and the check-in staff were friendly and very helpful. We were offered the use of the fitness centre facilities, etc. but elected to take breakfast in the restaurant. By 8.30 am the receptionist arrived at our table with the keys to our room that they had prepared for us. Throughout our stay the staff proved friendly and responsive at every opportunity. The hotel is, in our view, well situated and was in easy walking distance of the shops and waterfront.

The rooms were comfortable. Our only complaint was the fact that our room did not have wireless internet access, although it did have wired access.

We would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel in good shape. Large room, large bathroom. Parking garage connects to the building. Three blocks away from several restaurants. Professional staff.

we returned after 3 days in the carlton ,with club lounge access and were very dissopointed by the lack of respect they way they treated us compared to locals.
We had to move rooms twice due to the filthy state of the rooms !
The hotel is supposed to be 4-5 star but it does not meet 2 stars!
The extra for the executive club is a rip off , you get the same room and cheese and biscuits in the evening with one drink !
On the positive side the staff were ok .The internet is a rip off !

  • Disliked — very dirty
  • Tips/Secrets — dont bother with club room ,it is not worth it !

Spent the weekend in a double double Carlton Club room for a "girlie" getaway with my mother. We had a lovely time and found the service to be unobtrusive, but efficient. We dined at the onsite Japanese restaurant and had a lovely meal with friendly staff.

The only "downside" was the quality and number of pillows, with only 2 pillows on each bed and no spares in the room. 3 of the pillows were feather (definitely feather, not down...) which can be quite hard when you sleep on them, and the 4th pillow was what I would consider to an antique - a foam chip pillow!. But, a quick call to housekeeping meant that we had extra pillows (just the type I like) delivered to the room.

  • Liked — Convenience to the theatres with a walkway underground to help avoid the rain.
  • Disliked — The pillows definitely need updating to true hotel quality

After a great cruise, we disembarked and stayed in Aukland for 2 days. This hotel is an average hotel. It is definitely not a 4 star hotel. The bathrooms are spacious but the interior suites are old and need to be remodeled. Also, as I was relaxing in the lounge after hours, an employee questioned me whether or not I was a guest, asked me for my room number and name and requested me to leave the lounge. I have never been treated so poorly as a guest in a hotel. In addition, the concierge staff cannot communicate properly and no absolutely nothing about the local area. My Lonely Planet book was more informative. I would never return to this hotel.
