“I could live here!”
Reviewed 18 September 2011

I had a weekend in Auckland where I anticipated visits from various family members, so I went mad and got myself a Deluxe Suite - which meant I had a separate bedroom, a lounge, dining area and almost full kitchen. I had about a dozen family members in there at one point and everyone had somewhere to sit - two sofas, a couple of chairs and the dining table chairs. The room had a big flatscreen TV in the lounge and another smaller one in the bedroom. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was spotless.

I was up near the top of the hotel, so didn't hear any noise. The view was a bit scruffy in the immediate vicinity, but I could see out over the harbour and across to Albert Park. With the entrance straight on to Queen Street, the hotel was in a brilliant location - convenience stores are nearby and my favourite internet cafe just a couple of blocks down the street. There are three parking structures within about 100 metres of the hotel.

I had a special request to make of the hotel, as I was having something delivered before I checked in which needed refrigeration pending my arrival: they took it up and put it in my room. The only service related niggle was that their computer thought I had checked out, so that someone trying to telephone me at the hotel had trouble getting hold of me.

By carefully shopping around, I found an amazing rate making my stay excellent value for money.

We were very happy with our stay at CityLife. We pulled up at the entrance and were immediately greeted by a very nice gentleman who parked our car for us and also by a lovely lady that whisked our luggage straight up to our room. The greeting at reception was equally friendly and professional and check-in was very quick.

Our room on level 5 was more than adequate, not large but fine for a one night stay and it was lovely to have a towel warmer in the bathroom and a good selection of toiletries. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well.

The location of the hotel is very convenient and central with several coffee shops nearby and within walking distance to the harbour the Sky Tower, restaurants & shopping.

Check-out was easy and quick also. Would definitely stay at this hotel again if visiting Auckland.

We got to connected rooms for our family in very reasonable price. The rooms were well equipped and everything work properly. We didn’t like the idea that the mini bar items spread on the table- it might seem like a gift (but you need to pay for it..). We accommodated in floor 10, without much view from the windows. Despite the height, the noise from the street of group of drunken people arrive and interfere a little bit our sleep. The breakfast was excellent – a great choice of many delicious food. The arrangement with the car parking was convenient (the hotel staff are parking your car). To conclude- great accommodation in respect to the price.

We were three colleagues who attended a conference at the SkyCity Convention Centre in August. Instead of staying at Skycity or Skycity Grand, we chose to take a 3 bedroom suite at the Citylife. The hotel is 1 block from the Convention Centre, and it only took 5 minutes to walk up Durham West, and along Albert Street.

The daily rate including valet parking (1 car) and breakfast (3 people) was significantly better than the Skycity rate for three rooms, and we were all delighted with the suite in the Citylife. The three bedroom suite was on a corner and comprised of a large one suite, a studio suite, and a single room, all with external doors and adjoining doors. Basically we got 2 kitchens, two lounges, 3 bedrooms with individual ensuites (one with a bath, two with showers), and such features as DVD players, french press coffee, room safes, daily newspaper, really nice toiletries, etc. It worked out really social, and also very very spacious. Because each "room" had an external door and ensuite, people could be as social or private as they wanted.

I thought the breakfast in the Zest restaurant was good - with plenty of food to choose from.
Internet in the hotel was expensive, but you do get 30 minutes of free wifi in the lobby each day for a quick update.
(Just as an aside, and nothing to do with Citylife, a wifi coupon in the Skycity Convention Centre for use during the convention was $20 for 3 hours, but it was cumulative and you could log on and off to make it last).

The hotel has two entrances - one on Queen Street (which closes late at night) and the main entrance and lobby (and valet parking) at the back of the hotel up Durham Street West - a very small one-way lane off Queen Street. Valet parking was efficient, and cost $35 per night - it is possible to pre-reserve it on the website if you make an online booking, however the hotel is right next to two large Tournament Parking buildings on Durham West - which may possibly work out cheaper if you are only parking overnight, and not wanting daily in and out privileges.

We had a suite on the 22nd floor. Great views of harbour and Sky Tower. The only time we noticed noise was on the Saturday night and people yelling could be heard but wasn't a big problem. Great to have a washing machine and drier. Also glad that a variety of teas were provided. Very comfortable bed. The reception staff were very helpful. Only one exception - after the conference had a day staying on and were advised that the Hobiton movie set tour was closed for winter, which was incorrect. We checked it out for ourselves and found it to be open.
We used the airport bus to get back to the airport and it would have been helpful if someone could have helped me down the escalator with my case. They were quite prepared to help if we were going out the top door.
Would definitely stay again.

Stayed two nights at CityLife for a school holiday break with the family. The two bedroom apartment was spacious, modern and well appointed with a full kitchen. (actually a 1 brm apartment connected to a studio). Staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel room was very clean and well serviced. There was a bit of late night street noise but I guess that is part of staying right in the city. Location is great for shopping, entertainment, restaurants and public transport.
The only disappointment was the buffet breakfast, a bit on the ordinary side and service a little lacking.
Overall a clean, friendly and modern place to stay in the heart of Auckland.
