“Nice enough”
Reviewed 26 March 2014

Stayed one night while passing through town. Nice and central, good parking, clean rooms and staff were pleasant.
Rooms were fine, great water pressure on the shower!
Buffet breakfast was good, lots of selection.
Was slightly worried when I saw how close the train tracks were, but I didnt get woken once.

We were dropped at this hotel for our final night of out New Zealand tour. The lobby looked modern and clean that is where it ended. My room on the third floor was at the end of the hall and I noticed right away the hall carpet desperately needed a good cleaning. The doors to the room were very much in need of clean up. In the room the chair was very badly cracked vinyl with chunks missing on the arm and then a bedside table the particle board top was badly chipped and swelled. Filth behind toilet. A hotel to be avoided it is also not city central it is several miles or a 15 dollar cab fare to downtown the bus though is only a dollar.

Room Tip: A west facing room is in the sun all afternoon and a busy commuter train line passes below opposite...

Our stay was what we expected from a mid-range hotel in Auckland. We normally stay at hostels, but found a good deal for a few nights from a booking website. The room was on the corner of the third floor, and we had a nice view of the bay and lots of light, and enjoyed the small balcony (too small to put a chair on, unfortunately), whose door we left open for a breeze (very nice after being in many hotels without any windows that open). When we did use the A/C, it worked a lot better than we expected based on other reviews, and did seem to have a working thermostat. The room was clean and well-furnished, and we appreciated the drink-making amenities, including little containers of milk for tea and coffee, which the desk staff was happy to replenish for us (be persistent, though, as once they said they'd send someone up to our room with milk, but nobody came and we had to ask again).

We were very happy with how quiet the hotel was, as central Auckland can be noisy. Luckily this part of Anzac Ave. doesn't get a huge amount of foot traffic, and though there is a fair amount of vehicle traffic to the east of the hotel, the building seems to be pretty noise-proof with the balcony door closed.

We didn't have a car, so can't speak to parking issues, and we didn't eat any food at the hotel. Internet scarcity is as expected from most low to mid-range NZ hotels, with minimal free wi-fi. There are two computers in the lobby with paid internet access that we used a couple of times without problems. The location is convenient to the university, Queen St. area, Vector Arena, and many bus lines. Be aware that to get back to the hotel from Vector Arena or Queen St. by means other than a vehicle, there is a trip up a moderately steep hill involved.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room (you get one extra window) on the east side of the building for a view of the...

The HVAC has 3 alternatives: blowing cold air constantly, which gets the room to 16 Celsius, blowing hot air constantly, and off; the thermostat is non -functioning. So you will need to manually turn the unit on and off throughout the day and night in order to maintain a comfortable room temperature.

The furnishings are cheap, old, and worn, with the veneer peeling off the desk, and the chair cushions in the reception area split. The rooms are small. The pocket bathroom door in our room was off the track and wouldn’t open all the way. There was mold and mildew on the bathroom ceiling.

They allow 20 minutes per day of free wifi, and only in the lobby. After that, it is $12.50 for 2 hours usage. Other motels and hotels in New Zealand allow much more, or unlimited, free internet.

There are signs at the reception desk saying that they charge a 1 ½% fee if you use any credit card. I have not seen such a charge at any other hotel anywhere in the world.

The only good thing about this hotel is that the TV gets a dozen or so channels, including CNN.

The hotel’s guests seem to be mainly tour groups.

Room Tip: Don't stay at this hotel.

The hotel is located directly across from the harbor, in an excellent location of downtown Auckland. Within walking distance of a lot of things to do. However, it is a very tired and dated hotel, needs some renovation. The staff and food were great.

Room Tip: for a view room ask to face the Harbor side.

We checked in close to midnight, to comfy beds, an excellently strong hot shower, amenities for making hot drinks, and a small balcony to step out for some fresh air.

In the morning, we crossed the street (Anzac) & followed our maps "downtown" for the gamut of coffee-shops & souvenir outlets. Location-wise, the hotel was within walking distance to the piers (we took the ferry to Waiheke Island) & quaint neighborhoods.

The BUT: only 20 minutes or 20 MB of free wifi per day per device, then you purchase more if needed. I had my iPod, iPad & Samsung smartphone, so I alternated among them. The warning of "limited parking spaces" did not mention the $10 fee. We had a rental car, and nowhere else in this busy city to park free close by. I was disappointed that hotel-patrons did not warrant free parking. And it did not offer an airport shuttle.

Overall I thought this was a decent place to stay. We never did eat at the restaurant/bar since there was plenty of cheaper choices nearby. The breakfast menu offered for about $20+ was very basic: pastries, sausages, eggs, fruit ...

For a better, cheaper breakfast in the nearby coffee shops, we also had free unlimited wifi. Then went sightseeing & shopping.

We realized that with the University in the same neighborhood, it also meant a variety of foreign cuisines available. Diagonally across (downhill) from the hotel, we found an unnamed "hole in the wall" with several stalls selling fresh-cooked Thai, Chinese, Indian & Korean dishes. Countless young people (students) trooped in & out with take-out meals; not surprising for $10-15 meals. A few streets away, the mall also had food-courts.

Overall, I think the Copthorne could be better (if they wanted to). Our stay was pleasant enough though

So i was clearly under the mistaken belief that the Copthorne Group were a bit flash; boy I was wrong.
I checked in late; stepped over some kind of giant bug dying in the entranceway.
The front of house guy was nice.
I got into the elevator ; holy hell ; it smelled like a urinal and the carpet looked like it was 100 years old. So i stumbled out of the elevator and tried to catch my breath as i made my way to my room. The hall ways are so dated and depressing. There was a terrible smell of damp outside my room and the carpets did look water damaged.
The room was OK admittedly; small bathroom ; the kind of fittings that are so old it is hard to make them look nice even if they are clean l which they were for the most part.
Had a tiny twin bed (one of 2 in the room for some reason even though i had booked the room for one). The blankets were those really old school woolen pink blankets so god knows how old they were but the bed was comfortable.
I went out to get some food, stepping over the lobby bug again and again on the way back. The smells didn't abate even in the morning when i forgot and took the same elevator again!
This is not a cheap hotel but it falls well behind the competition in this area of town.
Universally you could do better with your money. Very disappointing.
