“Dated and falling apart!”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

My husband an I stayed here for a nights get away, when we got there we were highly dissapointed!, the whole place is so so dated, the bedspreads were something from Nanas teenage years!, and the room was not in that greater condition!
Worst of all!, we were lying on the bed watching the television when a massive BANG happened in the bathroom!! -- the WHOLE extractor fan fell clean out of the wall (from where it had previously been double side taped to the wall!!!) and onto the floor - thankfully neither of us were in the bathroom!! not to mention the service was null and void when we mentioned the falling extractor fan to staff!
Parking -- well!!! if your lucky you wil get a park, if the carpark is full, then tough!
All in all we wont be coming back again, we were highly disspointed in it, and gutted we wasted our money staying there!!

Stayed here for a girls long weeekend.
The rooms were very disappointing! They looked a lot nicer in the photos, i know that professional photos always make a place look nice but this wasn't even the same room!
The bathroom curtain was starting to grow mold, the toilet seat was cracked, there were cracks that needed to be cleaned and it was stuck in the 70's.
This room offered a great location which was fantastic and also offered great views but it is a pitty about the rooms.

We stayed in the Copthorne from 05/12 to 10/12/2013. Allocated room 413 although we requested a high floor.. We read all the bad reports on Trip Adviser but thought our travel agent wouldn't place us in such a shabby hotel, how wrong we were.
On entering the hotel reception area it gave you a feeling of a run down hotel. Our room was near lift doors and low level. We found a number of cracked tiles in bath near shower head, stained bath, no proper door lock, bedside cabinets surface badly worn, never looked under sheets. The room just looked and felt dated and scruffy. We went to the reception desk to complain and ask for another room but the reception staff just told us they were waiting for a refurb and then just ignored us. I have a heart condition and need to avoid stress and this wasn't helping.
We visited the information center across the road and asked about other hotels in the area. They said that someone else had also complained to them about the hotel. We were staying in the hotel for 5 nights and to change hotels was going to cost $800 and this would have knocked a big hole in our spending money, we had another 3 weeks to go before returning home, so we had to stay in the hotel.
The noise from the lift was unbelievable, it sounded like the people next door were moving furniture about. The noise from the street in front of the hotel and just below our window was excessive, the secondary glazing didn't make any difference.
We had read on Tripadvisor about all these faults and didn't think we would have the same problems. So our advice is to give this hotel a miss and enjoy your stay else where, Never used restaurant because of the state of the hotel who knows what the kitchen would be like.

Room Tip: Make sure you stay at another hotel.

Street noise was disruptive, little sound barrier between rooms, beds not very comfortable. Difficult getting luggage to elevators as several steps were necessary to reach them. Rather dated in appearance and furnishings.

It is a great Hotel to stay as a family. It is an older hotel but well maintained. We stayed on two rooms on Level 10. Andrew S, the duty manager was very helpful and offered us a free upgrade to these rooms. My daughter had mistakenly booked her accom at Copthorne on ANZAC St but Andrew arranged for her to stay next door to us. The Mini Fridge was not working and was replaced by Santi from House keeping team. The Carpark may seem bit expensive at $24/night but worth it for safety reasons. The Breakfast at $18 was a sweet treat. The Hotel is very close to CBD and the views of the Harbour were awesome. Unfortunately, it was noisy with revellers at the ground floor on Saturday 28/12/13 and our sleep was disturbed a few times but was quiet after 2am. The rooms were cleaned every day with clean and soft towels provided as well all other room amenities. Two large lifts made it easy for going up and down. The lounge area is quite large and ideal to meet friends there. They have clean toilets at the end of the Lounge. Their Bar and Restaurant were clean and good. Finding Taxis were easy being close to the CBD and the Hotel is easily reachable by Bus and Train from Britomart. Well priced at $125/night and the facilities were better than many other 4 and 5 star hotels in the CBD.

Room Tip: Rooms from 10th Floor were quieter than others

Summary: go there if the location is important to you; avoid if you want a plush modern hotel.

Starting with the positives:
1) You can't beat the location, if you're interested in Auckland's wharfside/viaduct precincts. It's smack bang on the waterfront. It overlooks the harbour and is immediately next to not only the tourist information office, but a variety of exceedingly good restaurants, and adjacent to all the boating and waterside activities you could desire! It's an awesome location from which to plan a boating or wharf based holiday.

2) The restaurant did surprisingly well for dinner - I was very satisfied with the one evening meal I had there.

3) The airconditioners in the rooms are *very* effective! They bring the temperature down quickly, and provide a good level of white noise to help filter out the inevitable sounds of activity on the waterfront. (Some may not find this to be a plus, but we did.)

Unfortunately, there were also some negatives:
1) Related to the age of the hotel: The building is very old and dated, and *really* needs a thorough renovation. The decor is "scruffy cheap mid-20th century", and the bathrooms are, while clean, a bit uninviting, and lack extractor fans. Also, the elevators are tiny and rather inadequate, and the in-room appliances are cheap and don't always work. I particularly enjoyed the alarm clock that showed random times such as 7:88, and blinked constantly in defiance of any attempt I made to adjust it. (It was replaced promptly when I advised the staff of this.) Also, the mattresses are pretty tired and wobbly. I suppose they'd be ok if you like a particularly soft bed, but I found myself waking up with a sorer back than I'd like because of them.

2) The staff are friendly, but there don't seem to be enough of them. We stayed there for the best part of a week, and on the days that we requested that our room be maid up, the basics were performed but details like replacing of in-room consumables was a bit hit-or-miss. Also, the room had no mini-bar contents despite having a minibar pricelist. (Not a problem for us, but some may feel the lack).

3) Our booking included a full cooked breakfast each morning, but we found the offerings to be rather basic and underwhelming. None of it was *bad* exactly, but it was a bit limp, lukewarm and dispirited, with a smaller selection than we have seen in other "four star" hotels. Also there was a tendency for items to run out during breakfast and take a while to be replaced; however I do note that if I collared a staff member and pointed out the absence, they did restock reasonably promptly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room as high up as possible. I don't know if it's a coincidence or some official h...

We stayed here a few weeks ago prior to departing on a cruise around NZ. The location of the hotel is ideal, just across the road from the departure wharf for the ships. Also very short walking distance to great restaurants, coffee shops and the city's main shopping precinct. Room rates were good considering the location, where it lets itself down is the age of the place, the reception area smelt like a year 4 classroom, the room we stayed in was circa 1965, and you need to get your luggage up steps (no ramp) from reception to the lifts. Room was clean but the street noise can make for a disturbed night's sleep. The beds were not very comfortable for us either. We will probably look to stay somewhere else next time as there are other better looking hotels very close by.

Also the taxi fare from Auckland airport to the hotel was $95NZ, which seems excessive, so if you can take the airbus.

Room Tip: Our travelling friends stayed in a room on a higher floor that was more modern
