On this visit I found the Copthorne Auckland Harbour City underwhelming on a number of levels. The room was average and dated in terms of all furnishings and general presentation and seriously in need of a makeover. A desk in the room but without an accessible power point put paid to any real work so certainly not a business friendly property and the restaurant experience left a poor taste in your mouth (excuse the pun!). Chowder with seafood that could get through a sieve and one piece of bread to go with it. On request for another piece of bread, the only option available was $12, for 4 slices of the same! Happy to pay above the average in hotel restaurants (who eats in them anyway except sad business people like me) but $12 for 4 slices of bread??!! Wouldn't recommend it and won't stay again. Only redeeming feature was its proximity to the Viaduct and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Get as high a floor as possible and avoid road noise. Ferry/harbour views are interesting but come...

Before booking we knew that the hotel was a bit tired and needed updating, but as we were only staying one night it didnt matter. Going into the restaurant for dinner it all went horribly wrong, the restaurant isnt at all child friendly, the waitresses were hopeless, they got our order wrong, we had to get our own menus and were never offered drinks. So we went to the bar to get them ourselves, only to have the bar staff have to ask someone else how to make a baileys and milk (thought it was pretty obvious) the prices were very over priced for the amount of food that you actually got. It appeared like we got bad serviced and were ignored by wait staff as we had children. Our experience was further disappointing by the customer service by the rest of the staff at this hotel. If you want somewhere to stay in auckland it is convenient to the viaduct and harbour, but dont go for the service because there simply isnt any!

Room Tip: The interior of this hotel does need to be updated, but we knew that when we booked. Our two rooms w...

Stayed for a night last Fri and while the bathroom is very tired and needs a revamp it was clean to the best it could be given the state of the vanity etc. We were on the 11th floor and the view is just amazing also so close to everything including trains. Would definitely stay again. I would hope a revamp is on the cards as this has to be one of THE best locations in Auckland

this hotel is very tired and in need of a serious make over. The bed was comfy and we enjoyed our three nights sleep there. We were on the 10th floor and still the outside noise appeared to be at our window level. My wife's major drama was that there was no power point in the bathroom for her hair dryer. It is in a great location and the views are terrific, easy walking distance to most places. We found the staff and service good. It is not the worse hotel we have encountered, and as we were only there to sleep etc before leaving for the day. WE will be in Auckland again soon and will probably stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms that are higher up I think are better

I stayed in the Copthorn Hotel in April with my wife, as we were in Auckland for just one evening.

Our first impression was not a great one even before we set foot in the lobby. Of the three “Copthorn” signs to the front of the hotel, two of them had lost the “C” making it the “opthorn” hotel. On the walkup to the front of the hotel my wife thank goodness noticed that the rain grating was missing a section about 300-400mm in length. If she hadn’t have said look out, I would have put my foot straight down it, and would have either sprained my ankle or broken my leg for sure. This sort of hazard right in front of a hotel is unforgivable. You expect it in Thailand, but surely not Auckland.

Having safely entered the hotel the booking in was easy and the receptionist was nice and friendly. When we got out of the lift at our floor, I noticed that the fire sprinkler system had been poorly retrofitted down the hallway, the pipe suspended below the ceiling and offshoots going through to each room via broken vents (the installers had obviously decided that this was a quick and easy route to put the pipe work in!) One thing I hadn’t noticed was that the room “key” that my wife had picked up when we booked in, was indeed a room key, on a huge plastic keyring! I expect this on cheaper motels but on a hotel of this sort.

On entering the room we put our bags down and took a glance around. The room was smallish but not too small. The bathroom was okay, but the tile grout was green with mould in places, and the bathroom smelled dank. This may have been because there was no extraction, which is really a necessity in any bathroom and more so one with a WC. Not good. The bathroom door was completely rotten at the bottom, and looked like something you might find on a camp site. The door itself was cheaply painted plywood… basically it smacked of a run down two star motel bathroom. The best bit however, was the fire sprinkler system extended through, and into the bathroom, but not just into the bathroom, the sprinkler head was positioned over the bath itself, as if it was a secondary shower system!. You really have to wonder what the installer was thinking huh. Maybe they had installed it in case someone decided to smoke in the tub, and could be somehow in danger of bursting into flames as he soaked!
Well it is possible I suppose, as there were no smoke detectors to be seen anywhere. Once again, very disturbing!

The air-conditioning control in the bedroom was a sight to behold. It looked like something that Jules Vern would have described. It wasn’t actually a control unit in the sense that we know them to be nowadays, but a rusty gold painted rheostat control, circa 1960’s. I was amazed at this one thing alone, as I didn’t think they existed anywhere anymore!

Basically everything was just ancient and lacking… apart from the TV which was HUGE for the size of the room.

Okay, as we had valuables we looked for the safe (even motels have these now surely!), but no, no safe in the room! Unbelievable.

In a nutshell this massive 12 story CBD hotel overlooking the waterfront, in fact arguably one of the best locations in Auckland, needs a major overhaul. This is the second time we have booked a hotel in Auckland and been disappointed.

For anyone who says “toughen up”, “stop whinging” etc, I say this to you; Auckland is supposed to be New Zealand’s most popular tourist city. Hotels here are packed out with people who visit from all over the world. If this is really the best you can do, it is SHAMEFULL. New Zealand deserves to be ridiculed and mocked over such shabby p**s poor establishments. The owners need to be shamed into making them better.
I have pictures of all of the above, and I will try and update here when I download them from my phone.

We were booked here twice as our package tour went to the Bay of Islands then back overnight to Auckland. Hotel was clean. We had 2 rooms during our stays, one on the 7th was noisy from the seafront music and the second on the 11th was much better. Our room wasnt ready for 16.00 so we finished up getting one on the higher floor. Both bathrooms were dated.
Porter was excellent and the food Ok--no great shakes Hotel is very convienient for the harbour and rail facilities. Also a shopping centre close by. Views were excellent

Room Tip: Book on a higher level

We were on the 9th floor and were advised we had the best room for our money. The beds were awful and we woke up each day with aches and pains and had sleepiness nights. The bathroom was ropey and shabby. The toilet seat was soft plastic and you almost fell through if you sat on the lid to dry yourself. The breakfast on Sunday morning had ran out of eggs, beans and we burnet our hand on the serving spoon as it had no plastic handle. The breakfast was I edible mashed tomatoes, disgusting sausages and very greasy streaky bacon with no meat ( streaks of cooked fat). One of the lifts had a ceiling missing ( very reassuring?.?) with the concierge acting as maintenance man trying to fix it. To cap it all you have 20. Minutes lobby WIFI and when you pay $25 for 24 hours or 1GB it gets used up with only 2 hours of email only usage. When I complained nothing was done. This place is an embarrassment for Copthorne Hotels and even a back packer would struggle with the 30 year old creaking infrastructure. We canceled our remaining 2 nights and went instead to Skycity with free WIFI and very comfortable rooms and beds.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else if you want a good room
