My partner and I selected this hotel for its central location. It's right next to the city's icon---the Skytower. There are plenty of restaurants here. I-site (visitor center) is right here.
Their buffet breakfast at Terrace was good. You can walk down to the quay from hotel within 15mins. The link bus is also close by. I would recommend this hotel as your initial stay in Auckland. It's easy to get your berring here.

Myself and my boyfriend had just flown for about 24hours from London to Auckland, to start our four month travelling adventure. My Boyfriend booked the “The Grand Hotel” for our first night. Our first impressions especially after our tremendously long journey, were it was Grand and Extremely inviting! We get into the lobby and I knew we were in for a great evening when I spotted a champagne bar with live piano opposite the reception, all decked out beautifully. Freshly made pink whoopee pies are laid out on the reception desk for you for when you arrived, Which pleased my boyfriend tremendously and he of course sampled a few!

We head up to the room on the 17th floor and the views over Auckland are awesome! Every time you go past the window you end up staring out over the city and beaches! We then both indulged in what was probably one of the best showers ever after travelling for that long, in the large well designed bathroom!

Before we head out for dinner we check out the spa and come across a few people in the pool, a couple walk into the steam room. Thinking that looked like a good idea we follow suit, only to walk in and see the older lady had taken her bikini top off and the old dude was completely naked! They must be Scandinavian on something! So if you are a prude maybe avoid the spa! All together a great hotel and the staff are very attentive and helpful.

After our strange encounter in the steam room we head out for dinner at Orbit Restaurant, which is in the Sky Tower, the tallest building in Auckland and has a revolving restaurant. It sounds amazing and my boyfriend books it as a way to start off our adventure! He could not of chosen anything more perfect! We have drinks in the bar prior to our meal (standard glass of champagne) then go up to our table in the revolving restaurant! If you go, make sure you don’t leave your bag on the side as you will soon find out it has revolved away from you!

It is an amazing experience to be able to tuck into your meal overlooking an incredibly beautiful city and watch it change as the sunsets. The sky changed and turned into an incredible blue/aqua color filled the sky and the whole city came to life with light.

The food was above average for a tourist spot, but you pay for the view! Slow cooked lamb (which you have to have in NZ) Callelloni with a cauliflower puree and Alex tried the Goats cheese. Both opting for a fillet steak for our main, which was ok! Washed down with a NZ Cabernet Sauv. We managed to make it through our starters and suddenly the jet lag hit us right in the face! We feel like space cadets, barley able to converse! I am sure the revolving restaurant and wine added to the feeling!

After the main course we are ready to drop, willing someone to come and carry us back to our room! We just about make it back, even though every flat surface looked very appealing! What a day!

If you are going to NewZealand and would like to check out the adventure of two foodies and winos, who love life and adventure sports around the North and South Island for 3 weeks in a camper van then take a look at www.carpediem-life.com ! Feel free to contact me and to comment for more info :). We are also travelling around Australia and South East Asia, if you have a second check it out!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the beaches.

We booked months ahead for our 6 day stay, this hotel didn't live up to its expectations at all & didn't have the manners to let us know of the changes of room availability that we wanted. Even though it was on their website. Shame on them for not even answering our complaint. We will pass on to our local and foreign friends!

We stayed at the Sky city grand hotel as we got a good deal online and also wanted to have a luxury stay in Auckland. We arrived at around 2pm and check in which was nice as we had just been travelling for around 40 hours+ so was nice to get into the room and have a nice sleep. However, we checked in no problem and made our way to the room. We then got to the room and heard voices coming from the room which we thought was strange. Anyway, the concierge came up and he knocked on the door and it went quiet and no one answered. As we could definatly tell there was someone in there he went down and got us a changed room very quickly which was good, we also got a harbour view instead of a city which was lovely. So finally get into a room and relax and have a few hours kip. The room is large and the king size bed is massive! It has everything you need and the bathroom is spacious. Mini bar very expensive and breakfast also! Just went into town to get breakfast as saves at least half the price.
Just one negative which was to do with the room mix up we then had the concierge again knocked on the door at 9pm delivering some other peoples bags which obviously weren't ours which I wasnt happy about, for a 5 star hotel I would of thought the communication would of been a bit better than that but never mind.
Also another problem we had is that the maid had left the fridge door open in our room and also left her master key in the part for electric!! Didnt think that was very proffesional either.
Apart from those slight problems we had a great stay in Auckland and would reccomend to others and will stay here again once in Auckland :)

My husband and I stayed at the Skycity Grand Dec. 30th and enjoyed a pre-new year's dinner at Orbit in the Sky Tower. Friendly staff, easy check in, great sky bridge to the casino/restaurant. Delicious ordered in breakfast, just the right amount of luxury for the right price. Robes & slippers with a view of the harbor, can't beat that!
