We chose this hotel after finding a "stay 3 pay 2" deal on the Air NZ website, and couldn't have been happier with our stay.
The room (#2126) on the 21st floor offered a Queen + single bed, perfect for myself, husband and daughter - it was in fact the most "budget" priced room, but was still very well-appointed, and being close to the top floor, always had plenty of light, and was very quiet. The bathroom had a separate shower and nice deep bath, all lovely and clean. Good storage, and the two bathrobes in the wardrobe were an unexpected surprise. The bed was slightly too firm for my liking, but absolutely perfect for my husband, so I guess it's all personal preference :-)
The check-in guy was great, quickly swapping our room over when we discovered that a "King" room had been allocated which didn't suit us. Check-out was again polite, smooth and hassle-free.
The hotel is in Federal St, which location-wise, is just a 10-15 min walk down to the waterfront, 5 mins from the art gallery, and literally a stone's throw from the hop-on hop-off bus stop in Victoria St West (great way to get your bearings), along with plenty of coffee shops and convenience stores around the corner.
Federal St is undergoing refurbishment, so car access to the hotel is currently (Jan 2014) only from the Wellesley St West end - it slightly confused our taxi driver, and there's a bit of dust and noise on that side of the hotel, so you may wish to book a room on the Albert St side until the work is completed, due May 2014. The concierge was on hand outside at the taxi dropoff point to assist with our luggage, which we thought was well organised given the access issues due to the street works.
We were on a bit of a budget, so instead of eating in the Skycity Grand's cafe, chose to eat breakfast across the road in the Skycity coffee shop - lovely ambiance, great service, fantastic coffee and some yummy breakfast choices.
My husband and daughter had a swim in the indoor heated pool and gave it the thumbs up. There was also a small gym on the pool level with 6 or 7 weights/running machines, all in working order.
We would certainly stay here again if visiting beautiful Auckland.
