“Lovely Hotel in a good location”
Reviewed 17 April 2010

Very comfortable hotel, with excellent breakfasts. Has a business feel, rather than opulence but well worth it if you need to stay a few days in Auckland

Dont be fooled by the amazing and spacious lobby, the rooms themselves are very simple and small in comparison to other places ive stayed. DONT get the smokers room unless you smoke inside all of the time, there are no decks or windows - simply air con. The breakfasts here are to die for, everything you could possibly want in a buffet. The hotel itself is beautiful and well set out, the staff are great but the rooms i didnt rate so highly.

As you can see from our other reviews, we've stayed at a few different places in the Auckland area. We decided to have a few days at the Sky City Grand for a change.

Whilst the Grand is everything you'd expect from a 4/5 star hotel, it wasn't that grand really. The rooms are small and the bathrooms really badly thought out at best.

Our first night we were given a room that had no bath and just a 'walk on' shower with a hole in the ground. This subsequently flooded the whole bathroom area!

We asked to change room to one with a bath and this was done with not too much hassle the next day.

Our second room had a bath and a more 'proper' shower cubicle, however it still flooded the whole bathroom and the door to the cubicle was directly behind the bathroom door - so really badly thought out.

We made use of the gym/swimming pool. The pool could have been a bit cleaner and also notices for parents to be more responsible regarding their children should be put up. For instance whilst trying to have a swim there were several Japanese children with their father jumping/diving in close by to other swimmers and generally being a nuisance to others. Fine, no problem with children being there, but please could the parents be a bit more concious of other people!

We went to the tapas bar/restaurant over the road and that was really good to experience the NZ take on tapas and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Grand breakfast though didn't fare as well - at $37 per person we felt it was expensive and they couldn't even provide bacon that wasn't streaky!

If you just want somewhere to lay your head for a night or two whilst out in Auckland city, the Grand is great for that. It's a huge place and just lacks a bit of soul really. You can't fault the location for the casino and tower - the view from our second room was right next to the tower - we felt like we were ready to 'blast off'!

We had two rooms on our recent stay and as we'd booked together, we were really pleased to see we'd been allocated rooms just up the hall from one another - this doesn't happen very often in other hotels so was very handy to nip into our friends' room for a pre-dinner drink etc.
Rooms are lovely, great design with the lounge to sit on - the bathrooms are a little pokey, particularly when getting in and out of the shower, but we got used to that. It was nice to have a shower separate from the bath.
We had a lovely time at the Grand and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to others, the location is fantastic and with the casino complex just across the road, there is plenty of entertainment on your doorstep.
I didn't make it to the East Day Spa this visit, but it's my favourite day spa in all of AU/NZ - so will just have to come back again soon!
I also love the artwork around the hotel - starts in the lobby with those amazing garden paintings but the more contemporary pieces throughout the hotel are also very beautiful.

We stayed at the Skycity Grand after having 2 nights at Skycity and the 2 were completely different experiences. The service at the Grand was fantastic, fast checkin, extremely helpful concierge, lovely room. The room at Skycity was slightly larger than the Grand but the service was so much better. Everyone was helpful at this hotel, if we had bags someone went out of their way to assist, doors were opened and people spoke to you. We enjoyed cocktails in the lobby bar which were lovely. The only downside was the smallish tv which looked tiny compared to the one at Skycity however we were there to holiday and not watch tv so this is a minor issue. Would highly recommend this hotel to those who want quality service.

Love it - our favourite place to stay. Live on Waiheke Island so enjoy staying here when off the island for the night. The kingsize bed's literally are "Heavenly" and always guarantee a fabulous nights sleep. Service is always fantastic and location is right smack in the middle of the city. Highly recommend.
