“Interesting building and setting...art was ok”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

Spent about 90 minutes here and enjoyed looking around the building and seeing how the new section had been added to the heritage building.

I liked the older and more traditional art and sculptures but most of the more contemporary works were not my cup of tea.

If you have time constraints I would definitely recommend Auckland War Memorial Museum over the gallery by a wide margin.

“Small, gorgeous building & delicious cafe for lunch”
Reviewed 20 April 2014 via mobile

A small collection is on view inside this architectural pairing of the old traditional building with the new. More to see than you might imagine. See the Maori pieces if not much else.
The on site cafe has a nice selection of sandwiches etc. good place to grab a bite.

“Not to be missed”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

Auckland Art gallery is probably the best deal in Auckland.
Apart from the fact that it is free, it is structurally really beautiful and very nicely set out with plenty of room. The collections are also good--not the Louvre, but very interesting. Overall a very good experience.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

I went to this place by a chance. They have a good collection of contemporary and 17th century pictures. The building is nice and the park behind the building is even nicer to relax and chill out.

“Free and fun”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

It's free, it's convenient, it's fun and don't worry about the guard at the front, he's a statue. At least when we were there, there was a good selection of contemporary and Maori art. The building and grounds are themselves worth seeing
