Award winning building. Nice cafe. The shop is excellent for quality and interesting gifts for your friends, and you...And of course the art gallery is the best in New Zealand. World class exhibitions.

This art gallery is worth a visit for the architecture alone - it's no surprise it won World Building of the Year 2013. Entrance is free (fee only for special exhibitions), the collection small but very interesting, and it's right next to beautiful Albert Park. An easy walk from the harbor, I highly recommend this gallery.

Spent about 90 minutes here and enjoyed looking around the building and seeing how the new section had been added to the heritage building.

I liked the older and more traditional art and sculptures but most of the more contemporary works were not my cup of tea.

If you have time constraints I would definitely recommend Auckland War Memorial Museum over the gallery by a wide margin.

A small collection is on view inside this architectural pairing of the old traditional building with the new. More to see than you might imagine. See the Maori pieces if not much else.
The on site cafe has a nice selection of sandwiches etc. good place to grab a bite.

Auckland Art gallery is probably the best deal in Auckland.
Apart from the fact that it is free, it is structurally really beautiful and very nicely set out with plenty of room. The collections are also good--not the Louvre, but very interesting. Overall a very good experience.
