Enjoyed this gallery immensely - they have an very wide collection of New Zealand art covering a long period. Could have done with having longer to look at everything.

Nicely displayed contemporary, mixed media and regional art mixed in with some very nice works from early naturalists and explorers. One wing includes a number of portraits of Maori peoples and their facial tattoos from early in the European settlement. Worth an afternoon's visit, including a small café which we didn't try but looked good. We expressed an interest (lack of knowledge of the Maori) and the docents were very enthusiastic to try and help with information. Beautiful wood ceiling in the second story foyer/landing. Grounds are worth exploring- good view of Auckland. Worth a donation otherwise no charge.

The Auckland Art Gallery - Toi o Tamaki - offered a very good gallery experience pretty much right in the heart of Auckland. Great value for all, given that admission was free (a small charge applied to special exhibits). Donations were accepted, and it's worth dropping a few dollars in to help support them. The gallery featured some fascinating works amongst both its permanent and temporary galleries, especially the NZ specific stuff, with the historical Māori portraits being particularly moving. Happily photography was allowed for all but some of the older, mainly Māori related works, although even this restriction is really not enforced and annoyingly a number of people were snapping away regardless with their little phone and compact cameras, sometimes complete with flash. It's this type of ignorant behaviour that sees galleries ban photography completely, just so these selfish people can get a cruddy reproduction on their poor quality camera that they'll probably never even look at anyway, so please don't be one of them. The gallery was pretty quiet late morning on a Thursday so you could have plenty of time to contemplate the works in peace.

The building itself is also very nice, with a blend of the original late nineteenth century building, a mid-twentieth century addition, and a third extension completed in 2011. The new addition results in the gallery visually blending the internal design into the surrounding Albert Park, and for this reason I highly recommend approaching the gallery through the park rather than from the city centre as you get a great perspective on it from the park.

The cafe was pretty expensive, but perhaps that's not unusual for galleries. I also took part in one of the free tours, so while I shouldn't complain too much, to be honest the tour guide seemed a bit ill-informed, making some obvious mistakes and causing me to wonder how much of what else she was saying was actually correct. That's the main reason I didn't rate this a five. I recommend allowing yourself two hours minimum to visit, though of course given the free admission you can always return.

Great effort by the Kiwis. Small art gallery, but interesting. Would have expected more local work. But all the same worth a visit.

Award winning building. Nice cafe. The shop is excellent for quality and interesting gifts for your friends, and you...And of course the art gallery is the best in New Zealand. World class exhibitions.
