If you love architecture you HAVE to vist the Toi o Tamaki. They did a fantastic job crossing the old, heritage part with a beautiful, elegant contenporary one. Stylised references to trees and maori culture, plenty of light and transparency, and very enjoyable spaces inside.

The new and old parts mix effertlessly, taste and measure everywhere. It fully deserves the "World Building of the Year Award" it won in 2013.

Beautiful collections too, but I'm a spoiled italian... Anyway it displays both ancient and contemporary artworks, worth a visit as much as the building.

I hope you'll enjoy as much as I did!

Like most galleries and museums, this can only really be properly explored if you're willing to devote 2-3 hours of your time to it. The architecture, firstly, is fabulous. The building has been enlarged over the past few years, to allow the gallery to extend some of its exhibits. I found the extensive collection of New Zealand art in the old wing of the building particularly interesting. You'll also find an impressive array of European paintings from the many prominent 19th and 20th century artists, across many different movements. There were some really great realist works on display when I visited. My only word of caution would be that this attraction can't really be appreciated on a hurried visit to the city. Give it time and you'll be glad you did. It really rivals some of the best galleries the world has to offer.

Must visit in Auckland! The exhibition of 5 Maori Painters and the Maori portraits are my favourite! I like the creative learning centre, to see the unexpected creative painting from other children. Helpful team in the gallery.

Not sure why but New Zealand seems to do museums and galleries amazingly well. This is both a wonderful building but brings to life so much of the country's history and culture. My thoughts were reinforced a few months later when I visited the Wellington museum - both show such a respect for the people and history.
