I grew up going to Auckland Zoo and always loved the 'childrens zoo' with the guinea pigs etc. I was so pleased to see that they had kept this aspect of the zoo as well as the massive dragon, which the children of today are still having just as much fun playing on. You could still see the remnants of the old enclosures and how they have been re-purposed to create more suitable environments for the animals. Gone are the red painted 'british-ness' of days of old and replaced with more soothing colours and textures of the natural world. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and around every corner was a different world. I loved particularly the the use of NZ native flora, it's so colourful and the show casing of some of NZ own native species. The bird enclosures are fabulous.
Also worth a visit when your in the area is MOTAT [museum of transport and technology] which is a tram ride down the road past Western Springs Park.
