“Perfect for a Sunday”

Downtown Auckland can be quite sleepy on Sundays so this is a perfect way to spend the weekend day as it allows for seeing a lot of landmarks, neighborhoods and parks in combo with getting exercise. We left from the Viaduct and walked east-west to Onehunga where we were lucky enough to have friends pick us up for a return ride. Our trip took about six hours and the walking was not difficult. Being a Sunday we were able to see what happens on an Aucklander's day off. Throughout the various parks we saw all types of sports being played such as cricket, rugby, croquet, and lawn bowling. We listened to bagpipers, heard a Maori men's vocal group and went by a free summer concert in Cornwall Park. Signage can be a bit sketchy along the way but we always found our way and it made it a bit of a treasure hunt too.

This is a great way to get a feel for many neighborhoods of Auckland as well as some of the parks and landmarks. We tend to be fast walkers and it still took us the majority of a day to complete (after a leisurely breakfast). We got off track a few times because the signs were occasionally difficulty to find or the colors were switched indicating which direction on the path (north to south or vice versa) you should be going. This should be obvious, but wearing good walking shoes (like sneakers, not just "city walking" shoes) will make this much more enjoyable.

We chose to start the Coast to Coast Walk at its southern end, Manukau Harbour. For 4.50 NZD you can take either the bus or the train from Auckland CBD to get there. The main walk (without excursions such as the summit of One Tree Hill) is 16 km long. It is advertised to take about 4 hours (again, without the excursions). With these excursions and a few breaks, it took us a bit more than 6 hours, because we took time to further explore some of the sights.

The walk leads along less busy streets where possible, and it includes several of Auckland’s many parks such as One Tree Hill, Mount Eden and the Auckland Domain as well as several smaller parks. The way is marked, and in most places pretty clear. In a few places, we lost it, but with a map from Tourist Information and a general sense of direction, we usually found it again effortlessly – no GPS or smartphones involved.

Until you leave Auckland Domain, you walk mostly through either residential areas or parks, with hardly and restaurants or coffee shops, so it would be a good idea to bring your own food and drink. You will pass several drinking fountains along the way, where you can refill your water bottle.

The walk is a great way to see more of Auckland and especially its parks, which offer some great views of the surrounding landscape and the CBD with its skyscrapers and the Sky Tower.

There is a walk that you can do which takes you from the east coast of Auckland to the west coast. It's 16km in length, and well worth doing. It takes about 4 hours straight, but we would recommend taking your time and having breaks along the way. The walk takes you from the Aqueduct through a number of suburbs, parks, observations and summits, even through a cow paddock! The highlights of the walk are the steep climb up Mt Eden and the walk through Cornwall Park. In addition, the walk through a number of different suburbs was interesting.

The ending is at Onehunga which has a simple marker near the water saying that you have completed the walk. Although a map is available from tourist information (which was closed when we were there) and there are some markers along the way, I would strongly recommend that you take a smart phone with you, as some of the markers are few and far between. We deviated from the route a couple of times, and the phone's GPS got us back on track.

After quite a lengthy walk, we were were hopeful for a coffee shop at Onehunga, but the is nothing there. So I would. Suggest that you take your own food and water. Alternatively catch the bus to Onehunga and then walk down to the start of the trail and make your way into the city.

Blessed with a blue sky day, we took the bus to Onehunga to start the walk. We'd got a map from the Information office in downtown Auckland and found that there are a number of buses that go to Onehunga by the Civic Theatre. Ride costs $4.50 per person and takes approx. 30 minutes. First uphill stood before us. One Tree Hill. A beautiful park. We walked between lambs and sheep who stood grazing. The walk really takes you from park to park with some links between through residential areas and the university. This made it more pleasing to the eye, but I thought it would take us along main streets that would offer up a lunch and/or coffee choice. This not to be. Would recommend you take a picnic and some water. There is a café in your first park but in our experience the coffee was like dishwater and lukewarm. We thought we'd buy lunch later..... but there was no later. After 4 hours of up hill and down, we'd made it back to the Auckland Domain and took a side trip to the Auckland Museum. Our feet were pretty tired by this time so didn't have a good long around but from our brief viewing would recommend this too. Did find food though! Really enjoyed the walk. Fantastic views. Gave us a much better idea of the landscape in which Auckland sits. Undeniably beautiful.
