The Amora hotel was booked for us through the 'We Love Rugby' tour provider and our expectations after reading trip advisor reviews were not positive.

Worst point - our first room (414) had a very noisy air conditioner - one of those mobile units, where a circle was cut through the window - a real minus.

Otherwise, the above room was ok, but very tired - shaky sofa legs and 'ewww' upholstery.

The standard tariff for this basic room was $400 per night for the Rugby world cup.

So to avoid the noisy air conditioning for our next weekend stay, we organised an upgrade to a penthouse suite for $150 per night. The air conditioning unit was whisper quiet - and a basic refurbishment has been made to the suite. The bathrooms however were the same - with cupboard facings falling off. Overall though - much better.

Service was very good and staff very courteous.

In room dinner was excellent - we tried different dishes for 2 nights.

Breakfast was ok - but the plates were very small and the hot breakfast was squished into a corner where you had to meander carefully around other guests to gain access to the scrambled eggs and potato hash in a very small, busy corner. Perhaps there is method to their madness i.e. the guests eat less? Breakfast was disappointing in comparison to their in room dining.

Location wise....this hotel is about 20 minutes walk to the main retail and viaduct area. Free red link buses are available nearby to get you there...but they were slower than walking. A 5 minute walk to the civic centre gets you to the bus pick up and drop off area for RWC Eden Park. Probably more reliable than the train system!

Overall - average.

Room Tip: Penthouse suite 1002 was privy to the fire and ambulance emergency centres....not the best for a quiet night.

Stayed in this hotel on the 23rd and 24th for the nz vs France game. When we arrived to the hotel they had mixed my name up for the booking. We only had debit visa cards and had to pay a $300 bond because we had no credit cards, this was annoying as it limited our money for the weekend - the staff member that checked us in was condescending towards my partner and I. The bathroom stunk and the glass on the shower had scum on it as well as the tiles. The glass also leaked everywhere when taking a shower. The breakfast was served buffet style and was okay - just what we needed. The bed was nice and tv good. We got this hotel as a grabone deal, I would never stay here again even with another deal. Sorry

Thank you for taking the time to provide a review of your recent stay at the Amora Hotel Auckland. We also received your feedback form and we are disappointed to note that some of the issues highlighted here were not mentioned on the form or brought to our attention during your stay. If we were made aware of the issues we would have made every effort to put things right. In regards to the 'credit card' policy, this is common practise in the hospitality industry. Unfortunately Visa Debit cards do not provide the same security that a credit card does.
We appreciate your honest and constructive feedback and glad to hear that some of your stay met your needs.

Enjoyed night in Auckland with my sister, had twin room with 2 Queen beds. Beds very comfortable and room quiet considering central Auckland.
Slight negative is you need to walk up quite a steep street but as a plus it's quieter than downtown. Still only 5/10 mins from Sky tower.
Room had portable air con unit that if you had needed would have been noisy. Couple of housekeeping points I had to let them know about: Broken power point switch and shower head cover came off but room clean. Used to be the Duxton and now the Amora so maybe maintenance had been let slip. There is a pool but you could not use it for laps only a dip so if you want to swim go elsewhere. Breakfast was included but average. Service friendly and attentive. Overall I would stay here again if needed room in Auckland for the night and was going to the Aotea Centre or in that area and only if it was priced accordingly.

The room was very good, loved the spa bath. One of the few hotels in Auckland that have an inroom spa bath. The service is not great, ok, but could be a lot better. The breakfast was good, apart from the cold sausages.

I have stayed here 5 times now and am impressed with the standard of the rooms and the professionalism and responsiveness of the staff. All the rooms have balconies and kitchens and baths and the extra little touches like bathrobes make this hotel special compared to others in the cbd area

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel facing the park - always quieter
