After booking a surprise night in this hotel for my husbands birthday, which I had already paid for upfront, we came to check-in with the plan of going out again afterwards. We arrived at the hotel with our booking forms ready to go, wanting to just quickly drop our bags off and head out again. We were then told that in order to check-in we would have to pay a $200 bond, in case there were any room damages. Now I don't know if this is standard for everyone, or if it was just because we are a young couple. In any case, we have stayed at many other hotels and never been asked for this. We handed over our debit cards which would not work because they were not "proper" credit cards. My husband then asked about using the eftpos card and she said that she could load the money back on after, to which i asked it it would go back on straight away or would it take 3 days? She the said that yes it would take a while. Not everyone has a credit card and not everyone had a spare $200 lying around either..... The thing that really annoyed us was that we were not informed prior to booking or checking in that we would have to pay a bond. We asked them to send our bags up to our room so they would be there when we got back. We then had to go out and find an atm machine in order to get the money out- we really didn't want to be doing that on my husbands birthday. Anyway we come back to check in and ask where can we park, she then replies downstairs but fails to mention that there will be a $20 parking charge- we only found this out when they refused to give us our full $200 bond fee back because we parked down stairs. So we get into our room and our baggage isn't there, we then go back down to reception to see our bag behind the counter. We ask " can you please send our bags up", the lady who had just served us a few minutes ago looks at us blankly and replies "where is your bag?" we then point to it behind the counter...need I say more? The room was pleasant enough and the bath was lovely, however we woke up in the morning to find that there was no hot water, so after some quick cold showers we headed down to reception to find out that parking is $20 and there is no discount even though there was no hot water in the morning. Not even an apology for the inconvenience. When I pay $185.00 for one night to stay in a hotel, I expect a lot more than this. If the staff and the service was up to scratch our stay would have been a much better experience. Needless to say, we will never be going back to this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a review of your stay at the Amora Hotel Auckland. It is disappointing to note that we did not rate very highly in terms of customer service especially as this is an area we are continually working on to improve. It is difficult to interpret the lasting impression you now have of our hotel as there is very little substance to the review that allows us to understand the issues you had with our team.
I am very sorry that we failed to meet your expectations during your stay and that your were not made to welcome or appreciated. It is certainly not a culture we are accustomed too or tolerate and I can assure you that our service teams will be addressed.
On another note, a $200 bond applies for everyone who does not have a credit card. You are right i saying that 'debit cards' are not proper 'credit cards'

Got this hotel on lastminute.com.au secret hotel deal - so obviously this place scores highly on value.

The best part of my stay at this hotel was the service. From the moment I walked in, staff were nothing short of polite and helpful to me. I even got upgraded to a better room and late check-out without even asking.

The rooms themselves were pretty standard really. Not that that was bad at all, but nothing overly special either. I did find it pretty odd that the spa/shower did not have a screen to go around it, which could be odd if someone wanted to use the toilet while the other is trying to relax in the spa. The air conditioner unit was also a bit noisier than normal, but I wouldn't say it was sleep prohibitive.

The street that the hotel is on is tree-lined and nice. Very easy drive to anything Auckland city. So plus for location.

Overall I wouldn't have any issue coming back to stay again at this hotel, but if there is a similar or better hotel for about the same price available, I wouldn't hesitate to go try that one instead.

Accommodation during a business trip is difficult to balance with cost vs comfort vs convenience. This hotel not too far from the centre of Auckland, New Zealand is the best balance of these three I have found recently. The rooms are generous in size, the beds are comfortable, the amenities are all you need and the staff are present and helpful.

We had a midnight check-in and were greased by staff that were very efficient in getting us into our rooms very quickly so we could get to sleep. The rooms have good tea and coffee making facilities and the room I stayed in had a kitchenette Good enough for self catering.

The hotel had a comprehensive breakfast and is about a15 minute walk to the city centre. Taxis can be called and appear in quick time.

I certainly will be staying here in the future when on business in Auckland.

After travelling all the way from the UK, I needed a proper rest in a decent bed & that's what we got at the Amora. The room had a balcony with views across a park & onwards towards the city. The spa bath was great & the bed was very comfy. The only real downside to the room was that the bathroom isn't that private, as there is just a shutter between the bedroom & bathroom. But apart from that I thought the room was excellent. We didn't eat at the hotel, so I can't comment on that, but the staff seemed friendly & helpful whenever we bumped into them. There is a small gym there, enough to keep fitness up. The hotel is situated very close to the CBD, theatres, cinemas etc, but the hotel is on a quiet street & noise isn't a problem. My advice is to search the internet for a deal, there are some very good rates available.

Good situation if a waterfront view is not your main priority. Room was generally well set up, but housekeeping was poor. Dirty rags left in room, tissues not replaced, towels taken when not necessary, or not replaced when necessary. Kettle temperamental; sometimes worked, at other times had to boil water in pan. Initial contact at reception was very poor. No help with luggage and cursory approach. Food very limited both in restaurant and room service. Very salty; to make you drink more? Long wait for main course (over an hour). Very small portions. Breakfast better. Wireless Internet only worked in Reception, not in room: too public for private conversations, and very cold with outer door opening frequently. Car park very convenient, but very expensive; $20 a day.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking park are much quieter and more pleasant.
