Received from attention on my arrival and was upgraded with their compliments to a room looking over the Harbour on the 11th floor - the location was perfect and the reason why I selected the Hotel.
Their service during my two days stay met all my requirements

Stayed at the mercer Auckland 22/march 2014 most expensive room in the whole 8 days we were in NZ $205.00 Aus for a ordinary room wifi was useless had to pay $40 to park.never again will i recommend or stay at any mercer if this is typical.management were hopeless.Will be in contact with Mercure senior management.Average room cost around NZ was 140 to 185 per night for very good rooms with awesome views pays to read comments before booking.A mistake i paid dearly for.Suggest backpackers would be a better alternative

Room Tip: do not stay at Mercure

I decided to save some money on this trip (paid AUD95 per night) and was taught you-get-what-you pay-for lesson once again! :-)
This hotel is in a very good location: close to public transport, shopping centre, airport bus (which saves you a fair bit of money), but that's about all positives I can say about them. Here goes my rant:
- NO wireless internet access in rooms, even if you are prepared to pay for it!! Only wired connection at exorbitant prices. This is when most people travel with tablets and smartphones. So your best bet is to buy a pre-paid Wi-Fi dongle or a SIM card if you still have to book there for whatever reason;
- NO safe in the room;
- Noisy air conditioning unit, may be hard to get asleep for some people;
- Room is in need of urgent renovation, including the security lock, which was ripped out (!)
- Bathroom plumbing not working properly including, but not limited to toilet flush and hot/cold water mixer;
- Very hard and uncomfortable bed and pillows;
- Broken TV set, which was starting at maximum audio volume each time it was turned on...

Very disappointed as Mercure is actually not a cheap brand. I did pay a low price, but it was a special, which is not available on discount booking sites. Unsuspecting tourists may pay up to $150 for this dump...

Lovely staff and a well located hotel. The rooms on the harbour side have excellent views, as does the restaurant.

The rooms however are in real need of modernisation and refurbishment. My bathroom had stained grout, discoloured plugs in the sink and bath, cracked panels around the sink in the vanity and worn looking shower fittings.

The room is not well designed for anyone doing business: the desk (a cheap MDF affair) has only 2 plug sockets, both of which are installed in such a way that plugging in a typical wall-wart charger/power supply for a phone or laptop is actually impossible. There was only one other socket (in the vestibule) and none near the bed at all, with all the bedside electrics being hard-wired into the wall.

Paintwork was tired and shabby and the A/C unit noisy, basic and less effective than it should be in a 2014 hotel.

Breakfast was fair although there was only 1 kind of gluten free bread for making toast, and it contained fruit!

Room Tip: Go harbour side for the view!

Unfortunately this hotel gives the impression of not being properly managed. The rooms look run down, the towels smelly, free internet only in the lobby and just for 30 minutes per day, overall impresion is not that from a four stars hotel.
Positive is the location, which is very central and provides easy access to the waterfront restaurants and bars. Positive also is that the receptionists are friendly and make you feel welcome. Overall we would not recommend this hotel for longer than a night.
