“Top location, good value, clean place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2011

I took a group of 40 Aussie students on ski trip organised by Ski Fever. After a fantastic tour skiing at Turoa, Jet boating, Lugging, Zorbing, we stayed at Kiwi International overnight for a days shopping in Auckland. The rooms were clean with new beds, sheets and pillows. I had the best night sleep. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dinner was tasty and filling and the hot breakfast was even better with the essential, a long black for me. I was then ready to start the shopping which again is a breeze because you just have to walk down the road and it’s all there. The location is a real bonus. I will certainly be staying there again as it can cater for large groups but also for individuals with a variety of rooms ranging from small to apartment style.

Room Tip: Check your room has an ensuite, there are lodge rooms and size of room, some are small

I needed somewhere to stay overnight before an international flight, and expecting to spend the day sightseeing I had little need for much more than a bed. I booked a single room with ensuite for $79 and figured at that price (and with the RWC opening the night after) that if it wasn’t up to scratch it was only for a night.

I’m pleased to say that not only was it up to scratch, it was really good – the location (top of Queen St, just before K Road) was convenient for using the Airport Shuttle bus – the drop off and pickup points couldn’t have been closer – but the hotel is down a short driveway which shields it from the worst of the street noise.

Kiwi International would fit into the flashpackers end of the market, even my single room despite being small had a flat screen TV and clean modern furnishings, and the ensuite was clean and modern too.

There is a bar and restaurant downstairs, I didn’t use them but would have been happy to do so – but there is a string of great Asian restaurants across the road that beckoned and I tried those instead.

Checking in and out was painless, internet facilities are good and the secure storage locker is within sight of the front desk so I was very comfortable leaving my bags in there. As a smoker I’m banished outside, which I’m fine with as long as there’s somewhere to go, and sure enough they have a little bench and a bin tucked around the corner from the entrance.

I felt safe both in the hotel, and the surrounding neighbourhood. With the variety of rooms they offer the clientele are also varied – young through to mature, solo through to families.

On the odd occasion that I get up to Auckland for a break, I’ll be looking to stay here again. I’d especially recommend Kiwi International to travellers who appreciate hotels/hostels which aren’t trying to be party central for their guests, and those who already have a game plan for what they are going to do in Auckland and just need a base from which to do it.

Room Tip: The building is old (windows aren't sound proof) so ear plugs will be a help if you are sensitiv...

The location is great if you are looking for something in Central Auckland. Walking distance to the Sky Tower, etc. The room was ok; nothing special. The heater was barely adequate for the nighttime cold and the windows didn't close completely, so we used towels to fill the gaps, which worked well enough. Parking was free, as was luggage storage, so that helped considerably. They were doing some major remodeling while we were there, so it might improve. I don't know that we would stay there again, but wouldn't run away if it were the only place available. Overall, it's ok.

Another trip away, and another place to stay!.
the kiwi was a good value place to stay if heading to Auckland for a budget get away.
well priced, and well endowed room for under $100 with free parking in the center of the city, comfortable beds, friendly and helpful staff, much more than what we expected for downtown Auckland at that price.
the room was large with ensuite, recently redecorated and clean with comfy beds and only a stroll to the center of the city.

did i mention the free parking............we had to be a little cheeky in parking, but it was achieved and being back off of queen street was secure.

we would definately stay again, and didnt find the room to be noisy considering it is in the heart of auckland city.

cheers kiwi,

we enjoyed our stay very much.............only thing was that there was no way to turn the radiators off as it was a very warm room.

Room Tip: dont rely on the "5 min parking only" spots to be vacated..........drive a lap around the...

It was great for the price, which was superb and the bed and room were very comfy. Room service was offered on a daily basis. The shared bathrooms were very clean and looked to be newly decorated. The staff were a bit vacant - not overly helpful, but nice enough.

Location at the top of Queen Street was superb. I did end up staying additional days, to help me sort flights etc. and book tours.

The first red flag was raised when I asked the Airport Express bus driver where we should alight that was convenient to "Kiwi International Hotel." "You mean the backpackers?" he asked. I had read about backpackers accommodations, as we were traveling on a budget, but I was assuming I was about to check into a hotel. Turns out Kiwi International is a bit of a mix of budget hotel and decent hostel. As our flight arrived around 6 am, we reached the hotel well before check-in. While waiting for the next available clerk, we overheard the staff haggling with a guest who was asking for additional (ubiquitous) instant coffee for his room. The staff happily stored our luggage gratis... in a hostel-style walk-in closet filled with luggage. The lobby is a big drab, internet is not free, and the bar is not worth visiting. Our room and bathroom were small and not air-conditioned. I would describe the room as uncomfortable, but adequate. The location was also a mixed bag. While certainly not in the middle of the Auckland action, we were able to walk everywhere. Not the best value.

The review headline says it all - "not too bad for the price". The reviewer quote "traveling on a budget" complains "our lugguage was stored (free) in a walk-in closet filled with luggage" - what else would you expect?? A case here I think of champagne taste on a beer beer income. As at the date of this review more than 35% of our room nights for the year were repeat guests - an almost unheard of repeat business level - but not surprising to us as we are undoubtedly excellent value in a top location.
