“Excellent location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014

I had an early morning train to catch and arrived quite late at night - this hotel proved to be perfectly located as I had just a short walk across to the Wynyard Quarter for dinner and then short walk to the train station. Although I never used any of it (actually fell asleep before I even got into bed), the room was well set up, almost like an apartment. My only possible problem was that the room seemed quite sterile, very bland in its colours.

We had a Grab One special for our one night stay here. The room was comfortable enough but a little tired in decor. It has a swimming pool, spa and sauna which we unfortunately didn't use but it did look great. The hotel reception is not really welcoming and therefore there was no sense of atmosphere. A great hotel has a "busy" lobby area which is the first thing a person sees when entering a hotel. This hotel had no buzz. The price we paid was good and it included free parking. Didn't use the restaurant here.

We chose this hotel purely on its location and price. Everything was ok. We managed to procure a car park in the basement which pleased us. The cost was $30 but one would expect this being right amongst it in auckland CBD. Loved walking everywhere and of course the viaduct is so close. Yes it was a wee bit noisy with all the traffic particularly in the morning going to work but it didn't distract from our locality. I had a swim which was slightly dark and dated but I had the whole place to myself which was a huge bonus and then I had a soak in the spa. Heaven on a stick for me.

Room Tip: Select a room on one of the higher floors if you can.

This hotel needs to decide what its customers expect when they pay to stay. Generally the staff and 1 bedroom suite that we stayed in was clean and well presented. However to be told that there was no parking available when we arrived and, as it was very wet, had to go elsewhere to park was the first little thing to annoy.
The second was that the very small TV in the lounge didn't work as the aerial wasn't plugged in, the remote didn't work and lastly there was only one remote for two TV's. The TV's were very small and one would of expected the one in the lounge to be at least 32".
The shower curtain was another problem as, with the batch being very narrow and the shower was over the bath, the curtain clung to one's body making showering difficult.
The couch was a fold up bed and they are notoriously uncomfortable to sit on and when it is the primary seating in the room it lets the whole relaxation part of the stay down.
The management would benefit from staying in their hotel for a night to establish what the guests are getting for their money. Thing would change as a result of that.

Read helpful reviews on Trip Advisor before we booked so we were well aware to book for carparking and being charged an extra $30per night for carparking. Then every time that you enter or leave the carpark, you have to ask front desk to buzz you either in or out. It kind of became a hassle after a while but we were pre warned. ...
Room was nice but tv was very loud every time you first turmed it on....heating thermostat was also broken but room was warm enough.
Went down to the restaurant for dinner on our last night but was informed that only microwaved meals were available so headed out elsewhere for dinner.
Staff were friendly and plesent and the Hotel was nice and we did enjoy our stay there but wouldn't go back due to carparking issues.

Stayed for a night in town for a birthday celebration (we live in Manukau). Not the best place we've every stayed but certainly not the worst. Amazing views, huge deck (we were on the 13th floor) clean but tired and always great having full kitchen facilities. Also used the pool, which was also quite tired and tried to use the spa but didn't seem to be working.
All in all, ok price-a little on the steeper side but did get a room with a view, ok room, great location (close to Viaduct, Sky Tower) sky TV stations weren't on the chanels advised so couldn't get a music station. I found the men on reception very good. Didn't go to restaurant as it closed too early! Would stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor if available

Not overly impressed with the Grand Chancellor. We had booked a lead in room, street facing & was surprised at how small it was. We only had a shower over bath, which I thought was disappointing for the price.

As we were enjoying a NZ road trip, we had a car & this was more than inconvenient for the check in staff. They had no spaces in their over priced car park ($30NZD per night) so we had to park in the Wilson's up the road & had to lug our bags down the street.

The wifi was also not included in the price & was ridiculously expensive.

This hotel was close to Viaduct Harbour, that would really be the Grand Chancellors only selling point.
