Budget Hostel in the centre of the city

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Jul 2017
Located in the centre of Auckland, its very practical to reach from Britmomart station. The hostel has many apartments divided with several rooms, from 4 to 12 beds. Check out is limited to 10 am which is very early. There is no free wifi. YOu only get 1 hour free. After you need to pay. At the lower floor there is a bar and they serve free food at times. For the price you can't fault it and staying central is convenient for transport.

There are places you remember for the good and those that colour your perception of a place. This Hostel is in an old building and the facilities are poor, the elevator broke down regularly in the times that I stayed there. The floors have an apartment layout with maybe several dorms rooms and a common kitchen area, toilets and showers. You have to pay too much for poor Internet and although you need key cards to get into your section they are regularly bypassed. The common area looks like the kind of place where hope dies and the staff had no understanding. They know you are a number and while they may smile when you check in, all they see is dollar signs.until you check out. It's centrally located but there are better places in the area so if you are going to stay somewhere choose anywhere else but this misery inducing hole.

I've stayed here before in the budget 4 person rooms. It's dirty and tight rooms and very old building but I expected that for the price and location. My problem this time was we stayed in a 8 person dorm. Everyone there was long term live in so they had clothes and stuff covering every inch of the floor and the latter going up to my bunk and my 2 friends bunk. Plus they had clothes and towels hanging off the top bunk. They would unplug our chargers and plug there's in even if the wall had two outlets and we only needed one between the 3 of us. I put my bag next to the way up the bunk since there was no other space and it was thrown into a pile of dirty clothes by the long term guest. We also had a girl living in our room who didn't have a bed in it but she was trading work for accomodation and didn't like the room she was assigned so she stayed with a friend in our room making it 9 people 8 tight dorm beds and 6 people's stuff everywhere hanged in the room. Me and my 2 friends had zero space available. I really do not recommend staying in this hostel is you are just visiting auckland. Pay a few dollars more and don't deal with the long term guest.

I'm trying to organize my words to describe the details of this place.
1. Price: It is a cheap hostel, yes, about NZD81/night during my stay in the central Auckland for a tiny box room. But cheap does not mean its worth. Wifi plus 3-4 dollars per day (can't remember the exact price).
2. Comfort: First part is noise. The night bar is directly sitting down stair. It normally keeps running until around 2 am (yes, pls note that ppl will keep laughing until midnight). The guests definitely can hear the noise and sleep worse. Well, if you are a nightbird and party animal then maybe you could adapt to. Then, room is sort of dirty, I saw some stain on the sheet and cover. No air-con in the building and it was really stuff and muggy in March (I couldn't imagine how did people live there during summer). The bed was uncomfortable and old, felt like the furniture were collected from Inorganic Collections.
3. Servies: Reception has some friendly staffs who work hard from day to night. No towel and any cloth to be provided as they trying to avoid stolen (hard to imagine people stole towels). oh BTW, I spend 3 nights there and couldn't sleep well during the night. Once I took a sleep nakedly (because it was muggy) in the afternoon while a cleaner came in with a quick knock and said sorry. Fortunately, I was covered.
4. Location: The location is good, central Auckland, 2-3 mins walking to wharf and Britomart. Surrounding by restaurants and other businesses.
The end, I wouldn't recommend people stay there for business and relax because you have to take enough rest and sleep to effort your work or life. The noise and comfort are both poor. On the other hand, this place may be good for some short stays for concerts or transferring with a lack of budget.

I didn't expect much as it was one of the cheaper hostels and after travelling for the past 4 years I am very used to living in hostels and roughing it. But this places takes it to a whole other level!

I never used the kitchen because it was so dirty and rarely used the small common area on my floor - I didn't even want to sit on that sofa.(seen in pic).
The cleaners were terrible, the girl that came in to hoover just did the small area in the middle of the room and then left the door wide open when she left.
The bar was directly below my room but as it was so stuffy and smelly at night we had no option but to leave the window open. I don't think anyone got much sleep.

What shocks me the most is that this hostel is only $1-$2 cheaper than other hostels in town but the difference in cleanliness and up keep is huge. I would advise anyone to stay somewhere else!

Also there was a leak in the corner of the room which mean when it rained the person in the bunk nearest got very wet.

Seriously, don't stay here. Only redeeming quality is great location, but not if you're wanting to get any sleep because it's right above a bar. There's two other hostels on the same street for similar prices - I would recommend them instead!

Rooms have a tiny window (if any), so always stuffy and smelly. When I was here last there was no hot water in the showers. Check in time is stated as 2pm - cleaning went over time, so I was waiting almost an hour to check in. The other time I stayed someone had accidentally cancelled my booking (which they blamed on hostel world!). No free wifi, you have to pay $4 a day. Staff aren't very helpful.

Stay anywhere else. Would be okay for just one night, but any longer and it's not worth it.
