“I won't stay here again..”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

It's called a hotel but it really is an old motel. The room was kept clean although they could have done with new bed covers. The ceiling creaked at night as if someone was walking on the roof. What I did not like the most of this place was the shower head - it was so low that I had to bend backwards to wash my hair (I'm 5 foot 7 - not exceptionally tall) and the water pressure was very poor. It was covered in pink water stain I did not feel clean after taking a shower. It was cheap to stay here at $72/night if booked for 7+ nights but next time I would pay more and stay somewhere nicer.

This hotel is a short 10 minute walk to the Vector Arena (the reason for booking here). It has free parking which not a lot of Hotels in the CBD have. The rooms as frequently commented on are a bit outdated but very clean and tidy and are a good size, the only down fall is that they are not very sound proof. The breakfast was good. It also has a nice outside pool which unfortunately for the time of year and that we were only there for the night we did not use. But for the price, location and convenience it is a well priced Hotel.

I have stayed at this hotel 3-4 times in the last 5 years if I plan to have a car. I like the central location, being able to drive up to near your room with the car and also the neighbourhood it is in is very nice.

As mentioned by others it is in need of refurbishment and it appears some rooms are definitely better than others. If I’m by myself I choose the wing to the right of reception that has the one bedroom suites, city view, not Rose garden side, as the city side is quieter.

I stayed this easter with an extended family group of 3 adults and two teenagers. We got one of the villas, which is one of 3 or 4 townhouses available at the hotel. We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 story one. It was dated but clean, spacious and the beds comfortable, cotton bedlinen and the kitchen comes in handy. I would say the townhouse is about 110-120 sq metres so very spacious. I got a good rate booking early and it was at least $50-75 per night cheaper than you would get staying in an apartment in Queen St or near there. I got a car rental from Go Car rentals and all up I got the car and apartment for the same price as some of the newer accommodation in Auckland.

In summarizing:
Pros
Spacious older style hotel rooms
Clean room, friendly service
Can drive car up to door
Very central for accessing many parts of Auckland by car and 5 minute drive to Queen St

Cons
Needs refurbishing
Some rooms on the Gladstone Rd side would be noisy
Some rooms are shaded –

Advice, if you get an unsatisfactory room ask to be moved if there is availability.. In their defence, bear in mind you get what you pay for, the rates for this property reflect the condition of the rooms, there is no free lunch out there, the rates are cheap and the rooms are good value for what they offer.

Room Tip: Try a villa if you can get a good rate or a 1 bedroom suite

We booked this accomodation online merely for the location. I read the reviews on TripAdvisor first so knew what to expect. The rooms are very dated - however they were very clean. Unfortunately our room had a terrible damp musty smell but we could not do anything about it due to the hotel being full so we would not have been able to be moved. I do think the time has has come when this hotel needs a refurbishement. However saying that we could not complain about the service - from check in to check out - the staff were very helpful and friendly.

We booked this hotel as we were attending a concert at the Vector Arena. It's a fab set up with some of the rooms in a separate block. We had a superior room overlooking the rose gardens with ranch sliders and a small balcony. Although the hotel is a little dated and could do with refurbishment, the rooms were modern, spacious and clean. The bed was comfortable and the hotel was quiet. The staff were excellent. All staff we came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant is excellent, and the menu isn't expensive. We also had the cooked breakfast which was delicious!

Our room was very clean and quite spacious and comfortable. The bathrooms are dated and a little shabby, but are clean and functional, with plenty of hot water, and good quality towels. The rooms have a frig and kettle. A room on the other side of the building would overlook the moderately busy road, but with the bonus of a beautiful rose garden and waterfront park on the other side of the road, with walkways through to historic Judges Bay and the Parnell swimming complex (great for families). A free carpark is a bonus as parking in the city is a problem.

Staff in the hotel restaurant (Jimmy Cook's)deserve special mention. We had a very nice dinner and received excellent service from Angela, and the chef, Lee, both of whom went out of their way to ensure my allergy to some food preservatives was catered for. I have eaten in many restaurants the world over and Lee is the first to offer to cook my meal from fresh ingredients and not pre-prepared bought-in products.

Room Tip: Our room on the 2nd floor, city side, was light and bright, with a pleasant outlook over the pool an...

The property is very quaint and reminded me of what it would be like in Parnell 30 years ago.
Check in was very quick and easy, staff were attentive and friendly :)
We booked a Suite as we were staying for 4 nights, they are very big and have a seperate lounge room and bedroom so lots of space if you are staying longer.
We had a Queen Bed in our room, however it seemed more like a Queen - so maybe they have had these for a long time and not been upgraded, we have a Queen at home and it is huge compared to the bed we had but still it was comfortable to sleep on.
The bathrooms are on the older side and could do with an upgrade - the furtniture was a mixture of old and new - the cupboards looked like they were still the same as when the property was first built - but then again there was nothing wrong with them. Maybe just a refresh would be nice in the near future.
Overall we had a good stay, a good base if you want to visit Parnell or the city would recommend to anyone on a bit of a budget as the rooms are reasonably priced.

Room Tip: The suites are great for longer stays - and ask for a city view its lovley to see all the different...
