Cotter House Luxury Retreat

We spent 3 nights here and I can only say the host Gloria excels as the hostess to the levels of a 1st Cru Bordeaux such a Lafite. Fabulous stay, sampling her pastries and afternoon tea in all honesty you cant better Cotter House. A repeat stay is most definately on the cards in the next few years. Fabulous building and service!

We arrived unexpectedly early at Cotter House at 8 am after a 26 hr flight. Not a problem for Gloria as she showed us to a guest bathroom to freshen up then provided beautiful fresh fruits and tea/coffee/juice in the wonderful ballroom. Every room at Cotter House is beautifully and individually decorated with an eclectic array of art and fine silverware which is used daily to serve her guests. Gloria provided a wonderful friendly and unique level of attention to all her guests with homemade compotes (the plum was exquisite), jams and interesting dishes to tempt you throughout the day with lively and interesting discussions too (especially over a bottle of lovely NZ champagne-style fizz).. This was our first taste of NZ hospitality and it set the bar high. When we return to Auckland, we will definitely be staying at Cotter House. A unique experience to be treasured.

Our 1st experience of B & B in New Zealand, what an experience! Beautiful house, amazing interior and our hostess, Gloria, what can we say.

Welcomed with afternoon tea and regaled with tales of NZ history, retired to a fantastic bedroom with beautiful furniture and lovely linens. Enjoyed a glass of wine with Gloria before exploring our dinner options.

Breakfast which was served in the amazing dining room was delicious and beautifully presented.

Thank you for a wonderful stay.

This is a long over due review...I can't count how many times I have returned to the Cotter House to enjoy special occasion or holiday, Christmas, Valentines, Birthday, events...
Not many properties could look more amazing than it looks on the web pictures, but Cotter house looks much better than its pictures. The house is a piece of art, with unique paintings and sculptures, and antiques collected by the owner Gloria. Once you get into the entrance, you will immediately be transformed a different world from the rustic New Zealand. The Cotter House is attractive, romantic, elegant, and smells of heritage and little Paris in Auckland.
The owner Gloria is the most friendly and lovely host I have ever encountered. She could bring everything you need to make your stay pleasant even without asking. She welcomes guests with her big smile and hugs and show guests around the house. She prepares the best quality duvet and spa bath for guests to enjoy the relaxing stay. She arranges messages and dinners on request. Everyday, your room will be filled in with fruits and homemade sweets plus tea/coffee and even Ports. I remember in one of the New Year's time, i mentioned my favor for cherries, she manages to get the best cherries for me in season. And she made the best Apple Strudel with the super crispy filo pastries and top quality cream fraiche.
The breakfast is a four course meal in the most romantic dining room, including the best CROISSANT, all sorts of pastries, fruits with gourmet yoghurt and homemade muesli, a savory dish, and sweets. The high tea in the afternoon is one of the kind beats any 5 star restaurant/hotel to shame. My hubby missed a lot of her caramelized onion tart with goat cheese, and I missed so much of her crispy filo pastry and Panna Cotta...and she changes her menu most times and enjoys to create something specials to you everyday. The only downside is you will be too full for anything other than the breakfast and afternoon high tea...-_-'''
So imagine sitting in the exclusive elegant dining room sipping a glass of Champaign and enjoy the exotic four course hight tea along with all the antique silvers of Gloria's collections (did I mention Gloria hosts most NZ wine award events at the house? and she always prepares the best Bubbly/Champaign for dining in her house).
There are just too many reasons attracting my returns to the Cotter house over and over again. Having travelled and stayed in almost all NZ luxury houses/resorts (like the expensive Huka lodge, Mollies, Wharekauhau Lodge, Eagle Nest...), Cotter house is somehow more homely while keeping all the luxuries but you feel like home. Not just for the beautiful and expensive heritage house itself, but more importantly for the most wonderful host Gloria, her warmth and home away from home hospitality. I will say if you miss the stay in the Cotter House, you will miss one of the most exciting vacations in your lifetime.
Thanks Gloria!

We stayed at Cotter House the last couple of days of our trip in New Zealand. Gloria made us feel most welcome and provided for our every comfort. We enjoyed the sauna and evening bath. Gloria had fantastic dinner recommendations and is a fantastic cook herself. The breakfasts were amazing and very good. We enjoyed the treats during our afternoon tea and our wine tasting. The last day of our trip Gloria recommended a fantastic antique shop in town. We ended up getting several silver pieces and crystal. After we got home we realized we left a plate we purchased in the house. Gloria was able to find it and send it back to us! We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel. Enjoy!

When faced with organising a party at very short notice, by a miracle I found Cotter House. Gloria organised a wonderful celebration and the stay was memorable in many ways too. Although we had planned an outdoor beginning to the party, the weather let us down, so Gloria took this in her stride, making plenty of room indoors for the guests. In this phase she served champagne & the most delicious canapés. She also managed a three course cordon bleu meal with matching wines for the guests. All the stress was taken out of holding the party and the feedback from all has been positive and most complementary. They loved the venue, the charm of the place, the atmosphere was lovely and we were surrounded by the loveliest artwork.

Although Cotter House is luxurious, Gloria and her staff offer a homely touch and quality of service and personal attention that one would be hard pressed to find in larger hotels. In saying this, Gloria also gives her guests space and privacy too. Breakfast was exquisite in both content, presentation and service. Throughout, Gloria was most generous with her time, and nothing was too much trouble. On short acquaintance she has come across as a very generous person altogether and a delightful one to have met.
