my husband and I liked this hotel because it is very clean and comfortable. It got most of the basic you need: bathroom accessories, coffee, sugar, tea & milk, iron, iron board, T.V. phone.
And the location is great. We don't need to take the public bus to see around downtown Auckland.

Room Tip: I would recommend this hotel to those who want to visit downtown Auckland

Probably the smallest hotel I have stayed. Stayed for a night after moving from the other hotel at the end of the road. This hotel is the cheapest we could find. We didn't expect much from the hotel given the price but still, we were pretty shocked to find out how tiny the room was. It's so tiny that we cant even open up the hard case luggage. The rooms were old, tired and the toilet wasn't that clean. This hotel is probably slightly better than a hostel. However, the staff were friendly, especially the older lady at the reception which was very helpful.

The rooms are very small, but if all you need is a place to lay your head, this is it. This is a 'no frills' kind of place, but it was clean and pleasant, the front of house lady was extremely lovely and helpful, and best of all, CHEAP!

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT facing the street as it can be a little noisy.

Read some good reviews on this place and booked for my older teenagers to stay while visiting for a concert; my priority was well located but above all clean and tidy. Perhaps it was because they were two 'younger than the average guests,' but they are well travelled and have stayed in a mixture of very nice places - both budget and higher rated. For a budget place they knew it was going to be small - but hadn't expected anything as tired and tatty. They didn't fancy a shower as it was old and not at all pleasant, mouldy sealant around the basin taps, scuffs and stains all over the walls, also it wasn't that clean. Like I said before - perhaps they were unlucky in their allocation of room - but budget/economy does not need to mean old and tired rooms. I've seen the photos to confirm it. Also I called the reception a day earlier than their visit and was assured that a taxi could be pre-ordered to take them to the airport for $35 pre-arranged fee. On requesting this when they arrived they were told this wasn't possible - they had to order it ten mins before they wanted it and nearly got charged $50 until they questioned it. As this was 5.30 am to catch a flight I am stunned they couldn't pre-order. Won't be recommending this to anyone I'm afraid. The reception staff however were very polite and pleasant - shame about the room!

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere - it's not about the size of the room but the relative state of it!

I rate this hotel "Very Good" based in large part on its economical price. It is not a fancy hotel. This suits me fine but it may not be for everyone.

I have stayed here several times over 12 years and will continue to return. Econo Lodge (formerly City Central) is a very basic hotel with tiny rooms and no frills whatsoever. But it is this simplicity that brings the price down. Some travellers will find it too basic and the rooms too small. It is one level above a high end youth hostel with individual rooms and en suites. But I can highly recommend it for safety, convenience, friendliness and efficiency of staff, and for the doing the basics right. (The rooms facing the street can be noisy; ask for the opposite side.) There is a convenient and filling breakfast on the main floor.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing away from the street.

The staff at the reception desk was very polite and professional. The lobby is quaint and the dining area is clean. The hotel room (single occupation) is very compact. But, it is a clean and safe place to rest your feet after a long day of business and travel. Don't expect a fancy hotel stay, but do expect basic comfort and privacy. In a pinch, this is a good location to stay.

I must say I was disappointed after reading that some other reviewer had said it was bigger than a Ibis I would have to disagree ! Not much difference at all. The room was very small, tired but clean. My husband hit his head on the shelving, the shower head is low (not built for taller people) and old. But the location for our purpose was excellent. The bed was just ok and lots of road noise even thou we were on the 6th floor. A plus was the continental breakfast which was nice - toast, fruit and cereals. Sorry won't be back as for a few dollars more can purchase a higher class hotel.
