Owner description: The second highest volcanic peak in Auckland, next to Mount Eden, One Tree Hill offers views of the city and has a huge obelisk at the top.

My friend picked me up from the airport and drove me directly to One Tree Hill and this gave me my first impression of New Zealand...emerald green hills, sheep and a fantastic view of the city and waters surrounding.

Can drive to the top - then 10 mins walk to obleisk, or walk all the way from bottom as good footpath

One Tree Hill stands out on the horizon as you drive in from Auckland Airport. Despite the name the tree is still missing...there used to be a pohutakawa to the right of the monument - for some stupid political reason the one vandalised years ago has not been replaced.

There are three reasons to go:

1. You get the best view of Auckland, the two harbours and the 14 other volcanic cones from the top. A perfect was to start a trip...and lovely at sunrise or set.

2. It really is a dormant volcano...with cone and crater etc. It is rather steep, but you can go down, between the sheep, and see the bottom.

3. The surrounding park is huge and contains ice cream parlors, cafes and historic houses. You will always see people running up and down the hill...but there is parking at the top (don't go on a weekend...it will be packed).

If you can park your car at the bottom, you have awesome views and exercise as well :)

Park and farm all rolled into one. Great views from the top of the hill--stop for the Ice Cream, if you don't have time for coffee or lunch.
