Have another holiday while travelling in New Zealand.. A 45 minute from Auckland Ferry Terminal and a couple of beers later, you'll arrive in Waiheke. Perfect for a day out or longer, with stunning beaches and quiet, chilled and beautiful landscape. Costs 35 dollars return, and has either car hire, bikes or a bus service. Definitely worth a visit! Take food and cook your own lunch at the beach on one of the public BBQs then have a swim or surf. Gorgeous!

The Hauraki Gulf is a National Park of the Sea, with protected islands and lots of wildlife both marine and terrestrial. It's a wildnerness playground on the doorstep of our largest city

This is probably the best feature in the Auckland region, many islands you can visit for the day or a longer stay. Great scenery and wildlife, good fishing and hiking too

It's very easy to get out on the Hauraki Gulf. Over many different visits, I've taken ferry trip from the wharf (at the bottom of Queen Street) to the quaint residential suburb of Devonport. Wander awhile amongst old buildings and dine at any one of the great cafes - some with views of the city.
Another ferry goes to Rangitoto which is a volcanic island and offers a unique experience. Trek up to the top of Rangitoto Island for excellent views of the city and the Hauraki Gulf. NB - there are no shops on Rangitoto so you must take enough water and food for last the day. Sunscreen is a must too!
