Take a ferry from the Auckland Ferry Terminal for a lovely day trip to one of the islands, it is a great way to spend a sunny day in Auckland.

Most people think of a gulf as great for boating, and this one is, but the Hauraki Gulf is also great for cyclists. A huge area of the gulf is accessible by roads and paths, as well as public ferries which all carry cycles, and you can visit some of its more intimate area's, islands, and upper harbour reaches on a bicycle. We often cycle around its reaches on high performance road bikes which require good roads and you can also go from coast to coast quite safely and easily as a days outing. It is well worth exploring.

in a bird migrating season, Hauraki Gulf from Coromandel area until around Waiheke Island and further up until Sandspit, Great Barrier, Goat island, Tiri Tiri Matangi island and other small-small island around is the best place to do bird watching. Huge number of waders from Canada and Northern America visting and stopping by to this region before they continue their trip to up to East China and Japan. Some place like Weiheke island is offer a nice cafe, restaurant and shops, while other island which is smaller is just perfect for relax or just weekend break away.
All the inlet and lagoon around Thames and Coromandel is really a nice place to be visit. Area like Coromandel even over such a nature adventure in countryside with a dirt and gravel roads, but it is worth visit in a summer especially.

I have since moved away from this area, I miss it heaps there are lots of amazing islands, beaches and wildlife to see. Just watch out for the Aucklander's (Jaffa's) who think they know how to drive a boat when they really don't, often going down the wrong shipping channels and not giving way!

Do try visit Rotoroa Island I grew up there with my family who worked for the Salvation Army as the Island was a alcohol rehab center since closed down. Now a small museum and massive renovations are being undertaken to restore the island to a prime native woodland island.

Waiheke is also very nice if you're into wine & art. (Can be some what pricey)

Great Barrier Island is magic two would take NO LESS then 4 days on the island to see a good amount of it.
