As a group of 5 we each had to order one of the degustation menu options
The boys had the 7 course option while the girls had the lighter 5 course option

The food was exquisitely presented and tasted amazing. Service was personable and unobtrusive.

Tables were private and noise levels low

The plates were small and perfect

Boys felt they could've had slightly larger serves, but the girls left feeling like it was the perfect size.

Great for a special night out, a special experience

Would definitely go back

The food is nothing short of extraordinary, wave upon wave of it, coming out in tiny servings and brought to you by deferential waiters wearing white gloves. The place is tiny and dark, though the outside is completely white, and there are large booths so you can’t hear anyone else’s conversation. It is the perfect temperature. The service is deferential and efficient, as well as knowledgeable. They cater for special diets by making it sound like it’s their fault for having had dairy or gluten on the menu in the first place, and rework every dish so you don’t feel like you’re missing out. It is, in short, everything you want a Japanese restaurant to be.

To eat at Kazuya is to experience more than excellent dishes--and they are spectacularly good--but also food as art and entertainment. We have chosen the 5-course degustation menu every time because the value for money is so good. Each dish is carefully created and each usually contains a surprise. The amuse-bouche spoonful of soup in a perfectly contained round ball, the variety of in-house baked breads, the exploding candies inside the tiny, perfect white-chocolate candies--and these are all "extras" that come with the meal--are memorable instances of the chef's belief that diners want to be entertained when they eat out at a fine restaurant. The courses are perfectly balanced and textured dishes; every bite begs to be savoured. Kazuya Yamauchi, Japanese-born and trained, spent years as a chef in Europe, so he knowledgeably pairs European elements (for instance, a creamy in-house cheese) with scallop, prawn, and (Japanese) miso. His dishes aren't "fusion" of dishes and tastes from East and West; rather, they are uniquely constructed from the beginning with ingredients and tastes from a wide range of cuisines, and all the ingredients are superb quality. The wine list is extensive and the sommelier is very knowledgeable. When a wine I asked for had recently been sold out, he recommended a fabulous alternative--at a lower price. We celebrate special events there and are always thrilled. The service is Japanese in its discreet and careful attention, and the ambience is softly lit, private (tables are screened from others by tall seat backs) and intimate, so conversation is easy. This is the perfect splash-out dining experience for me.

Yes - that's a very big statement but I think it can be justified. Three of us ate at the restaurant on a wet Friday night the week before last. The restaurant is situated in a pretty dilapidated part of Auckland and parking is difficult ( you can find a park in the street behind the restaurant ). Look for an unprepossessing large white door, walk through and a subtly lit dark wood vista ( including mezzanine area ( where we sat ) awaits. We were welcomed in effusive Japanese fashion and shown to our table. There is a choice of two degustation menus or a la carte. We chose the seven course dega with the avowed intention of seeing what the chef could do. Boy - did he come up trumps ! Each course showed off exceptionally fresh ingredients, combined in flavor and texture combinations that were other-worldly. And all of this coupled with brilliant service and an extensive wine list. This is not a restaurant where you just breeze in and out - it is an experience to savour. The dishes do have molecular elements but this is not overdone - it is not one of those experiences where it is difficult to work out whether you are in a restaurant or a science lab. As you will, by now, have discerned the experience does not come cheap but if you are after one of the most exciting Japanese/modern French fusion culinary experiences in Australasia it is a must try.
