“A good day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2013

This old lighthouse protecting the Manukau harbour and the Tasman sea is well worth a visit.
It is kept very nice, the parking is limited but free, and the walk from the car is an easy one for all ages, take your camera is a must, the views are great.
Travel from Downtown Auckland by rental car to Waiku via southern motorway, go through Waiuku township and follow signs to Manukau heads and Awitu , good roads but from Auckland well over an hour and suggest you stop at Waiuku for refreshments.
Another way is to travel to Titirangi - Huia and arrange for a boat to take you on a 12 minute trip across the harbour, I have done this before but can be tricky in windy conditions.
True New Zealand nature, not ruined by modern buildings

“Excellent outdoor experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

The vastness of the Manukau Harbour and the surrounding lush West Auckland bush.

A very historic outdoor place to visit and a good , invigorating way of 'blowing away the cobwebs'.

Take a change of footwear to wear if visiting in winter.

It is a very dramatic place to visit.

“Glimpse of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

It is a long drive from Auckland, but only minutes across the bay from Huia by boat. The old lighthouse has been refurbished. You can climb the stairs to the top and imagine what it must have been like to live in what was a very remote and wind swept area. The Manakau bar is a very dangerous place for boats and the scene of a terrible disaster in the 1800's. If you like history and to stand where, in the past, men have struggled to exist whilst providing a valuable service for boats of all sizes entering the harbour, then this is a place for you. Not good if you are less able.

“Stunning community effort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

This amazing replica of a 1800's wooden lighthouse is the direct result of a communities hard work and determination. It has now become an icon of the district and visited by many people during the summer. The views of the Awhitu Peninsula, the Waitakere ranges, Auckland and of course the ever changing Manukau Harbour are simply stunning. Take a warm jacket though as the weather there can and does change in 5 mins. from balmy warm breezes to rather chilly blasts.

“Spectacular Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2013

The heads at the entry to Auckland's Western Harbour and accompanying beaches are spectacularly beautiful. However, it is a rough road to get there, so recommended for AWD
