This has to be one of the most special places in the Auckland region! We went via ferry from Gulf Harbour on the Whangaparoa Peninsula north of Auckland. You need to book in advance, and also do book a guided tour. It's not expensive, but really helps as these volunteers know the birds and the botany. You'll see birds that unfortunately are now only found in sanctuaries such as these. Unique to New Zealand. It's a special place, and the walk is really interesting, and you do see lots of birds! The resident DOC ranger and his wife are lovely people, and very welcoming! The walk up to the DOC complex took a couple of hours. Once there we had a picnic lunch which we'd brought with, and complimentary tea / coffee from the lunch room. There's a shop where the proceeds get ploughed back into the reserve. Tiri is a fascinating place which is a prime example of what volunteers can achieve - the island habitat has been restored by twenty years of volunteers giving their time and energy selflessly. We especially enjoyed finding the takehe near the DOC complex.

If you have a spare day and the weather is fine take a trip to this beautiful little island. Easy walking tracks for the active have a picnic on the beach or find a spot with a view and enjoy listening to the bird song. Sit and watch the tuis drinking the honey water provided in the feeders. Volunteers keep this little island in beautiful condition. The short boat trip there and back makes for a very enjoyable day trip.

For those who love to be close to flora and fauna, listen to the wonderful bird calls and be close to watch birds in their natural habitat then this is a must visit. A model of conservation and run by selfless volunteers a must visit by every traveller. A beautiful place to have a picnic in the most wonderful bush setting. Need to be aware of the strict biosecurity requirements

My sister and I went to Tiritiri Matangi because it was our late Mother's favourite place. It was everything we had heard about it and more. Fantastic weather, great volunteer guide and a magical experience. My next trip will be to stay over on the Island. A must do!
