Only one boat trip a day from Auckland and numbers on the islands are limited. You will have about five hours to explore the island and the birdlife is amazing so a camera is a must. The tracks are well groomed and marked and you can make your own way around the island or go
with one of the guides.

A good day out if you enjoy the open spaces and enjoy watching native birds. The tracks through the bush are easy going although there is naturally some hilly parts. Many species of New Zealand birds may be seen here so if you like Birds be sure to take your camera.

Was able to visit this for a day trip in early June. The island is sort of a Jurasic park but for birds. There is only one ferry per day that visits the island. So the day I went there were no more than 50 people that visited the island. The trails are all very well groomed and well marked. Take your lunch and enjoy the island for the day. Great time.

For the walker or birder, this island makes a wonderful day trip. The ferry ride from Auckland is enjoyable (and I spotted a few seabirds enroute) and the boat left me on the island for about 5 hours. This was just the right amount of time to walk right around the island and explore the network of trails.

One can get very close to the native birds with which volunteers have repopulated the island because the birds appear to be unused to humans. They venture close out of curiosity. I loved the Pukekos foraging on the grass and the musical Tuis. The Fantails seemed positively friendly, coming straight over on sight and flitting about my person.

The trails are very well marked and carry one through a variety of habitats. I particularly liked the wilder north side of the island and the fern-laden gully above the southern beaches. Even though I came with a boat load of people, I found solitude most of the afternoon. For company, the lighthouse area is worth a visit. The Supporters have a nice gift shop there, there are toilets and picnic tables, all surrounded by a stunning view.

The Supporters and the Dept. of Conservation have succeeded in making this place a little paradise for nature lovers. Go.

My colleague and I went on a Friday and stayed overnight at the bunkhouse. The $5 tour on arrival was worth $100. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and we were sorry to part ways at the end. TTMT is a beautiful island and the overnight stay was the highlight of my year. For non-serious outdoors enthusiasts the day trip is perfect. For people looking to get more involved by all means stay in the bunkhouse. Great fun for all ages!
