A great day trip for the family. The guide was so knowledgable and we were able to see so much wildlife - can't recommend enough!

A short ferry ride across the Auckland harbour will bring you to this predator free bird sanctuary. Helpful guides, informative commentary. Bring a picnic lunch to have on the island, but take all rubbish off the island with you, there are no bins. The reforestation has resulted in some great walks , some more challenging than others, but there are walks to suit all ages and abilities.

This is a place for the birds, and were are the visitors. The moment the ferry stops at the landing there you are engulfed by birdsong. We have spent the day there 3 or 4 times and it's delightful. The tip for seeing more birds is to stray from the others in your group and sit awhile beside a watering station and watch as eventually more and more birds arrive to take a bath.

Everything about the trip is marvellous - a must do in Auckland. Do the walk - go clockwise and end at the lighthouse.

If you want a glimpse of what New Zealand bird life SHOULD be like, this is the place to go. If you want to be inspired by walking in a forest that was planted by volunteers, this is the place to go.
There's also a really nice gift shop!
I have never seen so many free-flying native birds in one place. We even saw two of New Zealand's rarest birds, the laid-back takahe and the amazing kokako. The guided walk cost just $5 and was totally worth it. Guides are volunteers. The tracks are excellent and there are seats and a big information centre with tea and coffee and a gift shop. My only complaint would be the cost of the ferry, which is clearly excessive as other much longer trips run by the vessel are cheaper than this twenty minute run from Gulf Harbour. While you are in the area visit Shakespear Regional Park, it is free, and predator free with impressive automatic gates in the predator proof fence.
