“too small room”
Reviewed 3 October 2013 via mobile

Small room, I mean very small!
The Refrigerator have very big noise, I had to unplug it.
The hot water pressure is very low.
Have a big LCD TV, but useless for me.
The room is clean.
Not bad location, 15 minutes To walk to wharf, lots of Japanese/Korean/Chinese restaurant around the hotel.

This hotel was in a good location to Queen street. Just located at the top of the hill. The room was small but clean, the shower however was pitiful. Also there wasn't any room to put your suitcase. The hotel was noisy with drunken guests returning to their rooms. The housekeeping starts early, lots of vacuuming whilst still asleep. Wouldn't stay here again, due to lack of sleep.

Dear Linda S:

Ascotia Off Queen has brand new rooms. Centrally located we provide value for money. Guests coming back to their rooms on weekend late night specially in groups, tend to enjoy togetherness forgetting other guests are sleeping. Housekeeping starts everyday not before 9am which is standard time.

This is my second time here and it is a better experience. This is a relatively new hotel and a welcome addition at this price range in Auckland. Front desk is very good.

My first stay, I was put up in a smallish queen room (the 03 rooms) without a desk so I had second thoughts about coming back. But the price for what you get (under 90 NZD during my stay, must be a promo) is hard to beat in Auckland where there is a lack of good private rooms at that range, so I gave it another go. This time I asked for a desk as I needed it to do some work, and what do you know, the room size difference is remarkable. Parking is 25 per night and wi-fi for a fee (seems to be common here in Auckland).

Positives: Rooms are updated, clean, and good value. Location is great. Across the road is City Rd where you'll find Da Vinci's and Number 5, good places to eat (save on the room to eat at a good place!), buses down the road.

Negatives: No in-room flat iron and ironing board (although these are available at the laundry room). The missing carpet close to the lifts is bothering me.It feels like the updating is not finished yet. And the missing desk.

P.S. The hotel does not appear on Google maps street view yet.

Room Tip: Room away from lifts and specify you need a desk (bigger room).

Dear JQ123:
Thank you for your repeat business and appreciate your time for writing your positive feedback. We are proud to give value for guests' money. Some rooms have study desk and guest can ask for it while checking in. You were wise at your second visit in doing so.

The missing carpet near lift doors will be laid before your next visit - promise.

The room was clean and modern but so small. My husband and I had two large suitcases and there wasn't anywhere to put them, we had to put one on top of the other at night. No bedside table, or desk. My husband had to do work for business with his computer on the bed. $25 charge for parking each day. Wifii charge. Restaurant food was awful,we were the only ones there, felt very uncomfortable. Felt uneasy about having my credit card copied. Would not stay there again.

Dear Bindango:
Thanks for your time in sharing your experience.
We have worked hard and continue to do so for providing value for guests' money. Room size is something beyond our control. In coming days industry standard will soon be redefined. Same is the case with parking space and hence parking charges. We do provide information on alternative parking options but these are not cheap either. Some rooms do have study desk if guest demands while checking in. Qualified and experience Chefs prepare restaurant food. Wifi charges are standard practice in the industry and of course subject to tariff rates. Credit card detail is prerequisite for booking in the industry.

After a month in a campervan it felt like a blessing to spend a couple of nights in these soft beds in these light (maybe a bit small?) rooms. Clean rooms, nice bathroom, good breakfast and friendly staff. The location is just superb with walking distance to Sky Tower, the harbour and also transport to the airport just outside the hotel on the big road.
One small thing was the fact that we could leave our bags at the hotel a couple of hours before check in, which is always nice, but the luggage room turned out to never be locked... However it was located just next to the reception, maybe they keep track in the bags that way?
All in all I would gladly recommend this place if you are on a slightly smaller budget.

Dear Jennha26:
Thank you for sharing your experience with readers. Apart from neat and clean rooms, we are centrally located in the hub where everything is at stone's throw. The best part is that you are not spending big dollars!

Just one point - The luggage room is locked 24hrs and strictly so under management's instructions. Please verify this during your next visit and confirm to our readers.

Front desk could hardly speak a word of English and was very rude. Then wanted a copy of my license as well as a credit card? Not very safe in this day and age. Room was a bit dirty. Little to no water pressure in the shower. No parking even though I asked for a spot on booking. Overall, never going back.

Dear Pedrothegreat:
Sorry that several unfavourable things occured at the same time.

For other readers: We have qualified and professionally trained hospitality staff for managing the hotel and refresher course for excelling in customer service is a regular feature. Taking credit details and ID proof at the time of check in, is a standard practice in hotel industry for minimising frauds. The hotel is brand new with all beds, linen, lighting, furniture and fixtures being of high quality. Rooms, corridors and reception are spotlessly clean and tidy.

May be another visit will corroborate above points.
Regards
Rishi

This hotel provided the essentials: a clean room / bathroom. A small cafe n the lobby, wifi for a fee (this is typical throughout NZ). We were walking distance from the needle, and a bunch of shops and restaurants and cafes. Up Queen Street, and to the right, there's a pizza shop where you can grab a beer and a takeaway pie.
Note: there is no A/C in the room, but you can open the windows. There IS a small heater in the room.
The only thing you should be aware of is that if you're on one of the rooms facing Scotia Place, and you happen to stay during "trash pickup day" you will get a LOUD awakening around 4:30 am. And also you will get some basic city noise, but that didn't bother us any.

Room Tip: if you want to see the needle, request it ahead of time. Also rooms facing the road (Scotia Pl) get...

Thank you for your positive feedback. The noise emanating from trash pick up duing early hours, is something we can easily change it into better timings. Hopefully next time you would not hear this.
