Description: "A passion for flavour and dedication to detail" Welcome to MASU, the exciting Japanese robata restaurant and bar located in the Federal Street dining precinct. MASU brings atmosphere, passion and a contemporary twist to the traditional robata style of cooking over an open charcoal grill. My philosophy is simple - use fresh local ingredients, enhance the natural flavours of each dish and let the food speak for itself. This pure approach to cuisine is reflected in our clean, natural decor. Add to this a lively, informal atmosphere and you have a beautifully bold and dramatically different style of Japanese dining in the heart of Auckland. Nic Watt

“Lovely food... Not cheap but worth a visit.”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We booked in for dinner and arrived at Masu a bit early. Tables were not quite ready so we waited at the bar for about 10 min... no probs there. Staff were very pleasant and we were well greeted.
We eventually got seated and ended up picking the degustation menu - which looks like a good sample from the 3 areas - Sushi bar, Kitchen & Grill. Food was wonderful across the board - full of flavors and everything was cooked very well. If i had to however rate in terms of what i preferred - if would be food from the Grill (BBQ over coal type meats) then Kitchen (dumplings etc) then The sushi bar. The grilled dishes (we had the pork and salmon) were outstanding.
All served in a timely manner with enough time to enjoy the food.
About 10 minutes after the mains came the desert (Pic attached) - this was very nice, too much variety to bother describing. We had an extra desert that said happy anniversary - not sure what that was about but we were complaining (I hope no one else missed out?!).
The bill was on the par with what one would expect of a gourmet type outfit - so expect to pay for what you get.
All considered Masu was a pleasant experience - would probably re-visit only for special occasions given the price.

“Nice but expensive dinner in under two hours”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

We came here because it was the Metro restaurant of the year for 2014 and left wondering how it got the award.

The good things,
The service was slick and friendly. We ordered wine by the glass. A minute later a glass was delivered and after another minute someone appeared from the bar with the wine bottle. Impressive. Although we had one main waitress they seemed to cover each other.
The server knew her menu and was able to recommend wine and sake matches.
The food was very good, well cooked and presented. There were some innovative touches and considerable thought had gone into how to present some if the dishes.
We liked being able to see the kitchen at work.

Not so good,
the portion sizes were small, disguised by the sharing concept.
It's expensive. A light meal for two including four drinks was almost $250, a hungry couple could easily add another 50+. It was a very nice meal not special. The size of the bill was a bit of a surprise given the amount of food.
When the restaurant became full it was too noisy to hold a conversation.

The awful. The uniform. Although most of the staff looked great in their black pants with the red stripe and grey shirts, a number of the waitresses had a long top with a tight red belt. The result of the belt was that all had rolls of fat that looked like spare tyres around their hips. Not a good look. How to make your staff look overweight and unattractive.??

Overall a nice meal. The two hour dining limit they advised at booking means that this is not intended as a special night out. On that basis it is overpriced. Although the quality in the food and service is very good the restaurant did not deliver on the overall dining experience. There are other places in Auckland that provide this level of service for much less or provide the overall dining experience for the same price.

“Amazing set tasting menu”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

We visited Masu after reading a review on TripAdvisor and finding that it was close to where we were staying.
We turned up without a booking on a Sunday night and were able to get a seat at the bar overlooking the grill which was excellent entertainment watching all the food being prepared. We ordered the MASU shomi menu which was a set tasting menu for $88 as we couldn't decide what to order. I would definitely recommend this set menu to anyone who wants a great meal including the desert! Each part of the menu that came out was fantastic and we left really satisfied and impressed with both the food and the service. Overall a great Japanese meal in Auckland!

“Best meal in a long time”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

An absolutely wonderful meal, the Black Cod was sensational. We ate from the set menu and this was a good way to experience a cross sections of the food available next time we would order from the standard menu. All very expensive but with the exception of the $100 Wagu beef course all worth it.

“What happened to the service...?”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

We booked 2 weeks out and had no difficulty getting a table- great for such a highly rated restaurant.
Booking process, via phone, and booking confirmation phone call very professional and welcoming.
Sommelier an absolute delight and very knowledgable and accommodating. Great wine/ food pairing.
Our waiter explained the menu in detail and made great suggestions re amount and variety of dishes to order.
The food was delicious, lovingly prepared and beautifully served-think ice bowls, wooden platters, pottery bowls.
The entire night went beautifully until dessert ( delicious- save room) when our waiter disappeared without a word.
No one was allocated to our table and it is amazing how many wait staff can ignore you when you are not their table.
Even the maitre d' avoided eye contacted.
Masu got it so right on so many levels and then inconsistent service let them down. A less expensive restaurant I could forgive BUT NOT at these prices!
