Description: OSTRO BRASSERIE AND BAR BOASTS A MENU BY JOSH EMETT, SWEEPING SEA AND CITY VIEWS AND AN INTERIOR CELEBRATING THE SEAFARERS BUILDING'S COLOURFUL PAST. Taking its name from the Italian word for 'a southerly wind', Ostro is a bold New Zealand interpretation of an international-style brasserie, with an upscale yet unpretentious atmosphere and multiple Michelin-starred chef Josh Emett at the culinary helm. Ostro sweeps across the entire second floor of the Seafarers Building, a onetime home to transient sailors which is being transformed by the team behind Ebisu, Tyler Street Garage and Fukuko into six dynamic floors of eateries, bars, a screening room and a private members' club. The Seafarers development's flagship eatery and bar is a literal feast for the senses. An all-weather terrace affords diners breathtaking views of Waitemata Harbour from the brasserie side, while glimpses of Britomart and the wider city can be enjoyed from the more casual City Terrace Bar.

“Nice views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2014 via mobile

We went last night for dinner, nice energy , we got sat at a table that we did not like and asked to change and this was not a problem . It then took 20 to 30 min to get any service , I'm not sure why but no one asked if we wanted a drink etc. Once we did get asked it was great, most helpful waiter , very nice cocktails and the food was delish .we will go back.

“Very good food .... but”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2014

This was my second visit to Ostro, but first time for dinner. Like the first visit, our reserved table was not ready until 45 minutes later. There is a large open bar and wait area including a spacious balcony looking over Britomart Square, but you have to fend for yourself to get a drink and find an open space to stand, prop or sit (if you're lucky). We were finally seated - and that is a lottery too - if you're lucky you get a dining table, else you are seated on bar tables with high chairs that are none too comfortable. Having all hard surfaces makes conservation difficult as the noise levels are near deafening when the place is full (which it usually is), so you end up talking to the people next to you, screaming across the table, or staying silent. Those are the negatives - the menu is interesting with a fresh interpretation to NZ fresh produce and the prices are reasonable. The food quality and presentation is very good, tasty and makes all the negatives all right again. If you are window side, the views of the container wharf and water is pleasant but not essential. We had the same waitress as our first visit and she was outstanding. Wines regrettably expensive and not a great range. I wonder if Josh Emmett has just lent his name and initial expertise, or whether he has regular input over the quality control? Time will tell.

“Seats are bum breakers!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014 via mobile

Dined with a group for a business meal. Service very good. Food quality very good. Sides very good. Oysters magnificent although expensive. Seats, if you don't get a thin cushion, many of which were missing or had been doubled by diners are very uncomfortable but made bearable by standing often and enjoying the view.

“What value after Australia!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

Following a trip around Australia, I was taken to lunch at this modern, classy yet not over the top restaurant where I was made to feel very at home and not at all rushed....and was really surprised at the excellent quality and value!!

I should not be surprised by the quality and this was not a problem in Asutralia andhas never been a problem in NZ where quality has always been top draw.....but value was really special (well at least for my host!!).

I started with the shrimp risotto...the risotto was sublime and the shrimps almost as big as crayfish tails were succulent. The mains of spiced Chicken was spiced and cooked to a tee and just about managed to get some of the really good fries and steamed vegetable down assisted by some excellent NZ white and red wine........all the while ooiing at the spectacular view that is Auckland Harbour!

The afternoon passed with a very happy smile on my face and really look forward to returning to see the ever patient waitress who was fantastic!

“Wonderful Meal, Great Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2014

Despite being a full house for Valentines Day we had a great quality meal and excellent service at this restaurant. It overlooks the busy Harbour and is one of the few Auckland restaurants with such a view. It is situated in the old Seafarers Building and has a distinct industrial look entrance and a large barn like space. With all the modern fittings it does tend to be noisy especially for we older clients however this is made up for by the high quality fod served. As metioned in previous reviews the Ox Tongue is delicious and the Snappet was done to perfection. Everyones meals exceeded expectations. The service was attentive and profesional although not having one wait staff for the table was a bit confusing. There is a large and popular bar for pre or post diner drinks. A very enjoyable evening.
