Surf 'N' Snow Backpackers

I tried to check in to this backpacker because it was the closest to the Intercity bus terminal. The helpful receptionist said they only had a staff room available and that it might be a bit messy.
What I discovered was so disgusting I had to leave; I have seen refugees in better conditions on the news.

Do not stay here. Expensive wifi ($9 3hrs), broken sinks and a 100% no refund policy. With 6 days notice, I could not reduce my booking by 1 night. They didn't respond to 2 emails of complain. Kitchen grubby, broken taps and bigger freezer for staff than guests. Also found myself sharing a shower with a used sanitary towel. To be honest, if they carry on how they are, they will need that $24 more than me! Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Just stayed there my first night in Auckland and that was, honestly said, enough. Location is pretty good, right in the center of Auckland just one street of Queens St, supermarket around the corner and not too far from the marina and all the restaurants/pubs. Room rates are average for Auckland.
The hostel itself looks sort of messy and run down. It's not particulary dirty, it's more about the general impression. The kitchen is way to small for the size of the hostel, dorm bed rather uncomfy, hardly storage room for luggage in the room, unisex bathroom (afaik..won't count that as negative, but some people might do so), showers really low (like 1.60 m? Seriously..).
Nevertheless, the staff was really nice and helpful, good chat. I was looking for a campervan and the receptionist spent a good deal of time calling/negotiating with different rentals until we found something suitable. Thumbs up for that!
Elsewise, I hardly can recommend this place.

Intercity bus stop, Countdown (supermarket) and Sky Tower are very close to this hotel. The hostel is located in the middle of the city!! Great location!!
It was a nice time when i stay there!! In addition, The room rate was reasonable. It was only $20 in a 8 bed dorm. Staff are very friendly and helpful. They can speak many different languages.

We booked 4 nights on hostel.com and if we wouldn't have paid in advance we would have left early. Staff doesn't seem to be staff, just long-term stayers which are very demotivated and don't care about the hostel. That's the reason why the bathrooms are filthy and mould-infested and the rooms uncomfortable and frowsy.

There was a huge window in our room, but it's not possible to open it. So the atmosphere was like in a crowded glasshouse. The sun heats up the room during the day and there is no chance to get rid of the heat during the night. Our 6 Bed dorm with 7 people in it (mattress on the floor...unbelievable!) tried to leave the door open over night, but then all noise and lights from the corridors got in.

All in all we had a very uncomfortable stay in the Surf'n'Snow Backpackers and wouldn't recommend it to our friends. If your budget is more than low than you could give it try.

Worst hostel ever. We booked a night on hostel.com and we got there and he said there wasn't a room for us, but we already paid our deposit. The worst part was he didn't apoglise or try and find a solution, he just sat there. After 40 minutes we got a single bed for two adults to sleep in and he expected us to pay 70 dollars for it. Terrible customer service aswell as booking system. The rooms were dirty and the staff were laughing about the situation.

location was extremely good, down the road from the sky tower. Room was very gross! we paid extra for an ensuite which was dirty and the bed sheets were stained! we also had ducting running through our room so everytime someone showered we heard the water running through waking us up and we also didnt have a room with a window. we had friends staying in a double room but without an ensuite and they also had stained sheets but they did get a giant window which gave it less of a shoebox feel.

Room Tip: make sure you get a room with a window and ensuite
