“Good property in an excellent location”
Reviewed 18 April 2009

We stayed here for 2 nights in March 2009 during our visit to New Zealand. The apartment was large and spacious and the washing machine was a huge bonus! It was very clean and well equipped. As with most places in New Zealand there is no air conditioning, however there are large windows/doors and fans are provided in each room.

The immediate area isn't great with views of dirty apartment blocks, however it is in an excellent location to get to the main sights. It's only a 5 minute walk from the Skytower and 10 minute walk from the bars and restaurants at the harbour. The closeness of the motorway is also an added bonus.

Parking is in a secure underground car park however, there is an extra charge for this.

My only criticism of this apartment is that on arrival we were given an apartment with two double beds despite specifically asking for 1 double bed and 2 single beds. When I queried this I was told they weren't informed about our request so there was nothing they could do. I looked at their printout of our booking and pointed out the request clearly written in the notes section. As soon as they realised it was their mistake and not ours, they were far more helpful and housekeeping were asked to change the room. If you require a specific bedding configuration I would recommend ensuring you add this onto your booking request and book direct through the Quest website.

Other than this initial mix up reception were very helpful and gave us lots of advice about where to go and what to do.

Quest is a serviced apartment, which are common in NZ and Australia. There was a full kitchen and washer/dryer in the bathroom. We had a great view of the Harbor (did pay extra for this).

There is a small balcony to look out at downtown.

As a serviced apartment things are a bit different from a hotel. Reception hours are limited, there is no restaurant on-site and the rooms are cleaned every few days.

The staff were friendly and the room was clean. There are a few items to be aware of though.

There is no A/C, and in the heat of summer, the windows do open up for a nice breeze but as you are in the middle of the city there is A LOT of traffic noise. There was a packet of earplugs on the table in the room when we checked in.

Under the building there is a car park. To get out of the car park, press the very small green button on the left wall (which means you drive to the garage door, get out, go to the left wall (right hand drive here) press the button, get back in the car. Why they can't put the exit button next to the car, and on the right side, I don't know??

Other tip - is I never really figured out where to park when checking in. There isn't a reception check in circle or anything. There is a small sign next to the garage door that says "5 min parking, reception" but to park there I would have to drive up and park half on the sidewalk, maybe this is correct???

We stayed at Quest on Nelson from 9 to 16 August 2008 in apartment 5B - one bedroom apartment with harbour view.
It was very clean and ideally located within 500m of Sky City. Wonderful harbour view. Although Nelson St is a one way thoroughfare we were not bothered by traffic noise - and we come from a lifestyle property in the South Island with nearesy neighbour 0.25 kilometer away. Apartment complex also has secure car parking. Highly recommended - great value forthe price.x

Having read great reviews and seen photos of this property, we were extremely disappointed with our experience at the Quest on Nelson. This property is located right off the motorway so the street noise is absolutely unbearable. The rooms are so stuffy with no airconditioning and the only way to get any fresh air is to open the windows onto the screeching traffic noise (which never stops). Thinking we would get a "harbourview" as booked, it was interesting that out of our bedroom we looked onto the filthy balconies of a neighbouring residential apartment and you could just glimpse a view of the "harbour bridge" from the tiny balcony which also gave much better views of the motorway!
It's quite a fair walk to the main city centre - Could not wait to leave this property!

  • Liked — Easy to see from the motorway

We booked a 2 bedroom deluxe apartment and were not disappointed with our choice. We requested harbour views and that's exactly what we got! The apartment has huge windows (but sadly no real balcony - yet the large sliding doors allow you to take sensational photograps from the apartment.
The staff were friendly & helpful, the apartment was clean and wll appointed.
Broadband Internet was a bonus and allowed us to catch up on some emails etc.
Although the weather in Auckland was not that kind to us, the evening cleared and allowed us to look over the harbour & bridge with lights blazing, and Sky Tower all lit up was a sensational sight from our apartment as well. Definitely worth staying here if you can get one of these apartments - we booked well in advance to ensure we got one of these!
Only one drawback and that was the shower. Placed over a bath, it had a large fixed shower screen which made it difficult to get in and out of the shower/bath. Could be a problem for people with disabilities.
Would definitely stay in one of these apartments again.

  • Liked — The view, the amenities and the cleanliness
  • Disliked — The shower/bath with difficult access

My Husband and I stayed at the Quest on Nelson for two weeks before moving into something more "long-term". We paid slightly extra for "a larger room with a balcony and fantastic harbour views". The views were fantastic but the room was still pretty small and the balcony was a joke - more like a safety rail, 50cm away from the window. The staff were all very friendly and the cleaning average. Good to have own washing machine and drier in bathroom. Kitchen was well equipt when it came to appliances but not utensils and cookware. We didn't use the gym and swimming pool as it was in a Children's centre down the road and not at the hotel. Easy 10 minute walk to city centre, supermarket and viaduct harbour. Overall, hotel is fine for a couple of days but I think 2 weeks was probably the limit.

We stayed here for almost 2 weeks, with a gap of over a week in between visits.
The apartments are right in the heart of the Central Business District, yet just a short walk from the City Centre.
Both of our apartments had fabulous views of Auckland Tower and the harbour Bridge.
Well geared towards the business traveller who may need to spend some time, there's a washer and dryer, fully kitted kitchen with dishwasher etc. which supplemented otherwise average, spacious, clean living space.
We found the underground parking useful, WiFi was available, DDI telephone calls to the room with answering service was very useful.
Reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly, this was the kind of service we grew accustomed to as Brits visiting NZ - and liked very much!
Families would probably like the space available, but most tourists will stay in hotels a little closer to the centre. This was, however, by far the best value for money quality accommodation we saw in Auckland.
