The toilets were dirty. The sinks look like they have not been cleaned for a long time and the shower curtain was positively disgusting.

Empire is handily located about 5 minutes walk from queen street. This is where the good part ends. Unhelpful, unfriendly staff, leaky roofs in the apartment, Dirty toilets, spills up the walls, a charge of $30 for simply locking the key in our room while trying to find the nonexistant 'Pool' and 'Cinema'... The restaurant was not set up, Not even being able to get a sachet of sugar for my coffee from the 'hotel reception staff' seemed to round out my opinion of the place, really.

Empire is a filthy hotel with absolutely appalling service.
We booked an apartment for 6 people over 3 nights and were only given 3 towels and 2 rolls of toilet paper. The apartment we were given was far from clean with alcohol stains up one of the walls, faecal stains in both toilets and uncleaned dishes in the cupboards when we arrived. The apartment obviously hadn't been maintained in any form of the word, the toilet leaked along with the extractor fan pouring water onto the floor for 2 days straight. Upon asking for more sugar/coffee we were told that they were "not a motel and needed to look after their finances". While staying we also locked our key in the room and requested assistance getting back in, which cost us $30. The reception staff were all exceptionally rude and unhelpful. I would not recommend this accomodation to my worst enemy as it was truly that bad.

Going to Auck for school holidays and finding a 3 bed appartment at this price with no charge for children under 12 seemed to good to be true and it was! The building smelt of smoke due to the many smokers hanging around the front doors. It is really student/backpacker accom. The 3 bedroom apartment was basic and (not in the configuration we asked for ie no singles for the kids just doubles) the linen was clean there was not enough blankets when we asked for more we were told that there were no more and to use the heaters which were on 1 hour timers ( for a cold night not that effective) neither could we have a toaster (they are banned as they set off the fire alarms)or any other cooking pots than 1 fry pan and a very small pot in the apart. We had to collect coat hangers from reception after clearing out the dirty linen in the wardrobe. The use of an iron required the leaving of your drivers licence at reception. For the 3 day stay bins were not emptied and no additional loo paper supplied. Ok you get it there was a lot to moan about! But if you go prepared ie have sleeping bags, somthing to cook in and low expectations you may find the great view of the grafton bridge makes up for all the issues not to mention the cost - where else in central auckland can you find accomodation for a family of 6 for $135 (eco deal) per night after all school holidays are about adventure and challenges and the kids were very happy to head home

For NZ$39 in the centre of Auckland, you are never going to get a great place to say. Empire is an Ex-Student Halls of Residence. You get a room in an apartment with a seating area, small and poorly equipped kitchen, a loo and a shower room. The other rooms in the apartment could be booked by any one although all rooms have lockable doors. But I wouldn't stay here again- it's a dump and if you can afford to go elsewhere, do. However if all you want is somewhere to crash out after a night on the lash in Auckland city then you've probably found a good place especially if you can sleep through any kind of noise (including thudding music from the bar downstairs, noisy neighbours and, in my case, being woken at 7 am by 150 people shouting a chant outside the main entrance).

When we checked in we we asked to pay the full amount upfront, I argued the point and lost, this raised concerns for me straight away, but as we were in town the same time the AC/DC concert was on, accomodation was scarce.

The front of house area is dirty and there were people EVERYWHERE, the check in staff served Asian speaking people preferentially.

The lifts are very, very slow and smell unclean. The halls are very narrow and smell like an old Chinese kitchen.

The room was flithy, I refused to sit on the lounge, it was that grotty, the carpets were stained and the toilet had faeces and gross marks all over it, not to mention whatever it was that was splashed up the walls in the toilet.

The fridge/freezer was leaking water all over the kitchenette floor and when we told the cleaners outside our room they told us it was one of "their" rooms so couldn't help.

The beds were rock hard and there is no airconditioning, the windows only open a fraction, so it was too hot and stuffy to get a decent nights sleep. Granted though the beds were clean and free of bed bugs.

The accomodation is very, very hard to find, we drove around for 20 mins before locating the street.

I would never again stay here, nor recommend it to a friend.
