If you've ever been curious as to what it was like for Harry Potter to live under a staircase, this 'hotel' is possibly the best opportunity for one to recreate the experience. The room is small, showing its age, and very poorly designed.

The only difference between the two however, is that Harry Potter's house did not have three nightclubs situated beneath it!

As other reviews have pointed out, the bathroom design is atrocious - it reminded me of an airplane lavatory - extremely claustrophobic. It sure is an interesting experience having a shower, and then the next morning sitting on the toilet with your legs ankle deep in water (poor drainage - floor was not angled correctly towards drain).

The most frustrating thing was that the toilet roll holder did not have a 'lip', so on numerous occasions, the toilet roll would fall off the holder, and yes, you guessed it, onto the water on the floor!

The quality of sleep was just about the worst I have experienced at any property. Three nightclubs are situated at street level under the hotel. It felt as though the music was playing through a speaker in the room. The bass was obviously very annoying also. Might I add, this was with all of the windows and sliding door completely shut.

Curtains were very 'weak', woke up each morning at first light.

Only reason this review is not one star:

- cheap
- good location
- staff friendly enough

However, would definitely avoid in the future.
Three days into the stay I checked out and stayed at skycity - needless to say, it was a good decision

Location - high marks for location: easy access to Queen street for bus transportation to/from airport, many dining options, and activities.
Service - high marks for easy, quick check in/out. Attentive when leaving/arriving. Seeing I was returning with grocery bag asking if I needed utensils. And in general that they were paying attention who was coming/going - made it feel safe.
Room -- yes, as noted - WAY smaller than pictures. Would not choose this again for work. I was here for work and had no place to put my suitcase except the bed or on top of the stove top. This made working in the room and getting ready for meetings a challenge. On the plus - did have an iron and "table top" ironing board -- just no table to put it on :). If just here for fun would have been fine.
Bathroom -- size of the bathroom was fine, yes small but 3 destinct spots - toilet, sink, shower - but the surprise to prepare for in your visit is the shower floor is the bathroom floor and the slope in my room...can't remember the number was toward the toilet -- so if you had not used the toilet before the shower -- anytime after the shower and you re-entered you would need to stand in the puddle to use the toilet. Definately then used the towels each day to dry the floor - I usually like to reuse my towels if I can but not after moping the floor.
Public spaces -- lobby clean, basic. Floor of elevators and hallways a bit sticky - but wasn't walking on them barefoot.

Room Tip: Would get a room on a higher level-- sound does travel - but think it helped that I was high up.

The rooms were absolutely tiny. You could shower on the toilet! Also, there was far too much packaging in the breakfast. The location was ok in the sense that it was central to the city, however it is not the easiest place to find.

Firstly, the one positive - location. Handily placed just of Queen Street and easy walking distance to the Viaduct. Okay here we go with the negatives. Firstly called the hotel a couple of weeks ago to ensure my friend and I had a twin room. Yes. Checked again when we dropped our bags off (to early to check in) yes, and one more time when we did check in. What do you know, up we went to a double room on the 8th floor. Back to reception where two gentleman tapped away at the computer for a while, and eventually produced a 5th floor twin room.

Compact dosen't really sum it up. It kind of reminded me of being in a cabin on a ship. That's not the deal breaker though. Could even put up with the "balcony" which fitted one person at a time. Hated the wet room shower which despite all efforts remained under about 5cms of water all weekend. Not a nice sensation when you are using the toilet or basin. No hair dryer. A miniscule TV that only seemed to work on one channel.

But the biggest bug bear, and the reason I am not my normally sunny self today - OMG the noise! As we walked up Wyndham Street at about 11.00pm I noticed queues outside the nightclubs on either side of the hotel.

Room was stifling hot when we got up there, and air con isn't an option so we opened the window. We could be forgiven for thinking we had just wandered onto a dance floor, loud thumping music and a lot of crowd noise. Quick - shut the window. The sound didn't seem to mute one iota. Boom boom boom. Squeal, shout, rev your car. Unrelenting - until 5.22AM. Which is roughly when the bottle collection trucks arrived.

Clearly I am the wrong demographic for the Ibis Styles. I'm not exactly sure who is the right one. I couldn't confidently recommend this hotel as more than a youth hostel.

Room Tip: I've got nothing....sorry.

Stayed in this hotel for a Saturday night, sure it is cheap but be prepared for NO sleep, claustrophobia and little air in this cramped rooms!.

When we arrived we were given terrible instructions on where to park, then went into our room and there was crumbs and leftover pieces of food in the fridge and cupboards.

We then arrived back and there was 3 nightclubs with ALOT of drunken idiots outside the hotel. The swipe card key didn't work so we had to wait to be let back into the hotel. The nightclubs went until 6am and didn't sleep as the noise would vibrate through the walls. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE experience!
