“Good Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

The first thing to pay attention to is that this is a tavern first, and a hotel second, so if you are expecting a proper hotel experience, you won't get it.

Location wise, it is hard to fault. A few minutes walk from the ferry and bus terminal in one direction, a few minutes to the Sky City area in another. However, I arrived at night on a weekend and it did seem to be in a popular nightlife area, so it was noisy for a few nights. However, it did quieten down during the week.

The room was basic. The bathroom was a decent size which was nice.

Cleanliness was my main problem. When I went to use the teaspoon in the room, it was disgusting, clearly hadn't been cleaned for some time by the looks of it - crusted on food. There were small blood stains on the bed sheets - not too bad, but enough that if I owned this place, I would bin them and buy fresh. Also, when I left the sign on the door asking for the room to be cleaned (mostly in the hope of a new teaspoon) I got a fresh spoon, the bin was emptied, one mug was replaced and the bed was made, but the room itself wasn't cleaned, made clear from the bathroom - hairs that had been there when I left in the morning were still there in the evening. Also the second mug in the room wasn't replaced or washed.

I also feel that for what I paid, there was a lack of facilities. No hairdryer, no second bin in the room. This second one is particularly important for the owners to note - as a female guest I may need to use the bathroom bin for certain things, I don't really want to use it for teabags as well. A bin in the main room would be useful. The room lacked anywhere to hang or store clothes - but there was a huge blank wall and built in shelf where it would be easy to fit a rail for hanging or to build some drawers for storage.

I give this hotel a good review because for what I wanted it for - a decent location that I could get to easily and get a decent nights sleep in - it was more than adequate. But I do feel that the owners could make some easy changes that could vastly improve the service they offer.

It is difficult to think of anything about our stay that was in the least way positive
The only thing that was OK was the location very close to ferry port
The Inn was dirty , noisy and very very smelly
The room we had at the top of the hotel was dirty the quilt had no cover and lots of bodily stains
The room had a small window which opened onto the roof by the huge kitchen extraction fans so the noise and the small was appalling
the wifi also didn't work
To cap it all there was no fire escape i the only way out would be to go through another bedroom and get access onto poor fire escape
Overall a nightmare waiting to happen

Room Tip: avoid like the plague

I didnt stay in the hotel, but stopped into the bar and had a meal and some beers. The sliders were good, so was the fish and chips on special for fridays at $15 including a beer. Actually the pub is a microbrewery making their own beers which were very good. The ale especially was superb, but why do they serve it so cold !! Food was reasonable - but very good value. Nice atmosphere too. Worth dropping in for an informal meal and a beer.

Selected due to location however should have chosen another accommodation option within sight as rooms were below par for what you paid, even at the rates they have going. Paper thin walls mean 'conversations' in adjacent rooms can be heard. Does have a decent shower and room appeared to be clean. The bar is great mind you and most noise from music during week ceases near midnight, not sure what weekend would be like but I would on the whole give the place a miss for overnighters, but do visit the pub for a drink.

Hotel is in city area at Albert Street and very accessible to everything. The hotel has a bar and restaurant and they brew their own beer. Classic rooms and good value for money. Great staff and customer service - they're very friendly!

The hotel itself was really nice. Our room was located on the top floor which meant we had to climb quite a few stairs. Not a problem for us as we are both young and in good shape, but could be a problem if you aren't. The hotel rooms don't start until the third level as the pub and restaurant occupy the first two floors so be prepared if you stay here. Other than that, our room was adequate. It was a good size and the shower was really nice. Ours had a little balcony type thing, couldn't really see anything from it, but it was nice being able to open the window and step outside. The location was good, easy walk to Queen Street where a lot of shops are then just a short walk down to the ferry wharf/Britomart area with a lot of restaurants. Our only minor complaint was the ceiling light above our bed was really dim (didn't really provide much light at all) and only one side of the bed had a reading light. Perhaps adding a second reading light on the other side of the bed would be beneficial.

Recently spent two nights here at the very top of the building. We knew there was no elevator and it was a bit of a mission for us seniors, I counted 73 steps from the pavement to the room. The room was spacious enough but very small bathroom. No views from the windows except tall buildings but I did love the skylight above the bed. Watching the night sky was quite nice. There was a window that opened up and you could stand on a chair and get out on the roof for better views. We had the Wednesday night 500g steak in the restaurant, very nice with lovely salad and fries. Just a stroll down the hill to the harbour and Downtown Auckland. The staff were very friendly also.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
